    Hi,
I have a Philips DVDR 3510V recorder at home and use it to transfer my home and holiday videos to DVD. Its a combination device with both a VCR and DVD recorder incorporated into it. I have used the quick-dub button on the machine to do this and while the video is playable on the Philips I cannot see the video files on my pc. It transfers them to the DVD no problem.......how can I read/play the files on the dvd with my pc?

Download VLC Media Player and that will playback the DVD although the default Windows Media Player should also do it which might indicate something else is wrong.

I used to have an old Philips DVD recorder myself and I remember there being a "finish disk" or "finalize disk" you had to press which effectively finished the burning off the disk as it would be kept open to allow for more recording to the disk. I think this used to happen with rewritable disks anyway.

Once the video is then burned to DVD you can simply open the DVD drive in My computer and and simply copy the files across to your desktop as there will be no security on the disk unlike a commercial movie dvd.

Thanks for the reply Stinicker......but alas no joy. I use vlc as my default player anyways and even using the "Media,Open Disk" menu option gives an error. I have tried DVD shrink as well to no avail. I can copy the disk to the hard drive in my other DVD recorder and it works fine. I will look for a "finalize disk" option on the recorder tonight although I think that option is in Nero somewhere.

I cant read the disk in windows anywhere for some reason......maybe its got copy protection built in to it somewhere even though its just video of the kids and my wife and friends. I might try some Ubuntu players tonight later if I get a chance. Some of the video originated on vhs tape and was transferred using the Philips DVDR 3510V. Maybe formats were changed in the process.

Was it PAL or NTSC tape because maybe the DVD recorder burnt it as an NTSC DVD and the PC won't recognise it due to the region lock.

Think I have it sussed......though "how?" is still a mystery. I used the philips to transfer it from tape to DVD, and the PC would not show the files in explorer or vlc.I then put the DVD into a Targa (Lidel purchase) DVD hard disk recorder and transferred the video to the Hard disk in that unit. I then copied the video to a dvd rw disk and popped that in my PC.....and presto I got the VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS format in windows when I browse the disk and the main video complete with audio shows up and plays in vlc. Obviously the Targa used a standard video DVD recording format. Thanks for yer input anyways mate.

I think this only applies to commercially produced copyrighted DVDs like movies etc.
