What happens in Week 7 of Semester 1 that there are very few lectures?

I still can't work out my timetable for first year, but I've noticed that, on my timetable at least, there are very few modules that include Week 7. For example, some modules say "1-6, 8-12" or "2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12". I've counted 4 lectures for the entire week that don't skip over Week 7 like that. Is that week kind of like a mid-term break for the entire college or is there some week-long event taking place?

Most of the courses, though not all! have a 'reading week' in week seven. No lectures- it's time given to supposedly bring your studies up to date, although tumbleweed blows through the college that week, enjoy!

So it's basically a glorified mid term break?

My advice is to try use it for what it is intended i.e. catching up on your work/making notes etc.

The temptation not to will be huge - I used it as a break last year and regretted it when the exams came around.

Ideally you should have all your notes/readings etc done before the 2 week exam revision period but in reality most people dont.

A lot of people try to catch-up on them during the 2 weeks which is kind of counter productive as you wear yourself out and stress big time.

Then you realise that you just cant do it in the time available and end up going into the exam under prepared.

You would be amazed at how difficult it is to stay on top of things especially in the likes of humanities were a lack of lecture hours is offset by the heavy reading load you are given.

Could easily have 8/12hrs worth of reading per week before taking into consideration the additional time required for making notes, class assignments and term essays etc.

Add all this up and you see why the likes of a reading week is required.

By any chance would that be when DCU holds graduations also? Could it be something to do with this?

No, sorry :( I was in science last year so I know it sucks! Science could definitely do with a reading week, I'm sure engineering people would feel the same

I just disagree with the lecturers giving us a big reading list and not having a reading week.

Either remove or make optional the reading lists or ad a reading week.
