I recently applied to a position which I have all the relevant experience in as I have done this role exactly so I know I am competent to do the job. Haven't heard back but the job ad said it would not be closing for a couple of weeks.

Anyway would it be more appropriate to call them or email?

Should I also wait for the job to be taken down before doing so?

Any advice much appreciated, badly need a job. Been unemployed for over a year.

I would say hold off until they close the ad.

They're more than likely weeding their way through all applications as they come until then and then they'll start phoning for interviews.

Did they give you a date by which you should expect to hear from them? Let's say they said "We'll call u with a decision by Sept 14th" Then on Sept 15th if you haven't heard, give them a call. If they didn't give you a date I'd wait no longer than 2 weeks before calling to check in.
Emails are very impersonal. Making a call shows you're more interested.
    Best of luck with it.:)

sound, thanks for that. Think I'll wait till the ad is down for a day or so and then give them a call. You're right a phone call definitely shows more initiative and desire for the job.

    Thanks.

@Uncle Moe: Don't wait till the ad is taken down. It could be gone by then. Jobs are bloody hard to come by - particularly one which you seem to be well suited to.

If it's been 10+ days since you applied, take the initiative and call them. Better you then someone else who is just as keen to get the position. They won't think bad of you for doing this and it shows you are keen. It also allows you to ask whether they received all of the information that they needed from you .

Also, in my experience, it's always good manners to send an email the day after the interview to thank them for seeing you etc. etc.

made no oddds, I called them while the job was still up and they told me they had filled it ages ago but forgot to take the ad down. The lady was quite nonchalant too, no apology at all. I wonder how many jobs I've applied for have already been earmarked for someone else. Still though life goes on.

Seriously anyone who feels bad being out of work just think of me, its been a long long time and I'm applying everyday. Something's got to go my way soon. God I feel like Old Gill in the Simpsons

Sorry to hear that Uncle_moe. Company's are harsh like that. Jobs still posted and have been filled. Also a lot of them are earmarked for internal candidates as they cost less than externals.
Don't get too down about it (easier said than done) something will come your way. It's a tough market out there. Don't be too hard on yourself.
In the meantime, you could check out http://www.skillnets.ie/ they do some good courses and if you're currently unemployed you could get some of them for free.
    Best of luck.

Sorry to hear that, unfortunately companies tend to not see you as a person and they just forget that you have a life too. I find companies nearly worse than agencies there - at least you can kind of discuss things properly with the agency. Keep trying, you surely will get something.

Similar thing happened a while back to me..

Applied for a job. Got a very enthusiastic call 30 mins later from the HR girl asking if I could come in two days later. Did that, seemed to go very well (they even asked me there and then to send them on the details of my references) and told me I'd hear back in about a week. So off I went and emailed them the references later that day as asked.

    .. then.. nothing..

Left it the week and emailed the HR girl. Still nothing. Next morning a nice generic PFO letter arrived in the door.

I have to say I was disgusted.. not just that I didn't get it, but a bit of professionalism and common courtesy shouldn't be too much to ask!

    Similar stories from me.

Had interview a 4 months ago, and it really went very well. Was interviewed by what would have been my boss and we got on very well, laughed together a lot but it was also professional and I was able to give a good explanation of myself and she also sold the company to me well.
At the end she asked if I could come at the same time for a 2nd interview and how soon I could start etc. She said I'd hear within a few days. A week later nothing from her via agency, and despite ringing several times I eventually got feedback 3 weeks later saying good interview but my experience did not suit and they were looking for the perfect person. WTF couldn't believe it. Strange thing is all this time later they are still advertising the role.

Also, had another interview on the 2nd of August, also seemed to go well and I am still awaiting feedback. Agency cannot get anything and yesterday I tried to ring her myself but the receptionist told me that the dept does not accept phone calls. WTF again! I just can't believe it. Half tempted to call into the office myself. Obviously I haven't got the job but you just can't treat people that way.

These 2 experiences and also lack of responses from other agencies and applications have actually knocked my confidence and made me very pessimistic about my future and really wonder what I'm going to do. If I don't get a job by Christmas then I'm goosed and will probably have to emigrate.
