Sony Vaio Screen Going Blank After Start Up

My mate gave me her laptop to try fixing it but I've hit a dead end, basically she let it completely run out of battery it died and it hasn't worked since. When it starts up you get the options "Start Windows Normally" or the "Repair ......" one, have tried both, but right after I select and option the screen just goes blank. Got into Safe Mode and ran the "Startup Repair", was running for over 8 hours so I cancelled it as I knew something wasn't right.

I'm guessing it's something to do with a faulty hard drive with is messing with the BIOS.

It's a Vista and it's the VGN-NS10L model of the Vaio.

    Any suggestions?

I would try a Factory Reset.i think you access it by pressing alt+f10 on start up.

I take it that wipes everything off the hard drive?

Right I'd have better leave it and just let her have to sort it out with her brother as it's actually his laptop. Would there be any other suggestions just before I send her packing?

Have a Vaio with Vista I was asked to speed up, seems to be doing a infinate boot loop of startup repair crap  after looking at it. I used Ubuntu live cd to copy the files from Documents etc onto my external drive, Running a hard drive diagnostics at the moment just to see if its the hard drive thats the issue. Will just throw Windows 7 on it and leave it at that .
Vaios are rubbish laptops btw, you'd think being Sony thered be some quality but not at all, have had to fix so many Sonys its ridiculous, this may just be Windows Vista acting the bollix though!
