I am looking into getting mobile broadband this year and really no nothing about which provider is the best. I know that o2 have the best deals for students at 9.99 for 10gb download but their speeds are meant to be poor because their phonecalls take priority over the internet usage....

Three on the otherhand are meant to be the best in terms of coverage and speed because they are fully 3g. ( well i was told this by the guy in the shop and he could be lying). They are a bit dearer as its 20 euro for 15gb i think but if you were to get reliable speeds it may be worth it.

Vodafone seem to be the worst from what I have seen in their brouchure.

If anybody has used any of these services could you provide some information on which is the best? The shop sales people are useless to be honest.

STAY AWAY FROM MOBILE BROADBAND. It's not really broadband. It's awful. And in Maynooth they all suck. All. Very badly.

Magnet, Eircom and UPC are the only ones worth getting in Maynooth :)

Housemate had an 02 one and it was intermittent at best. I'd definitely not recommend paying money for it.

Most of them however do a 30 day money back guarantee so you can always try them out and see for yourself.

Aye true that, I have used three & o2 in the maynooth area.

IIRC the o2 was worse than three, they ARE broadband and hugely faster than dial-up.

The speed they operate at very much depends on the network, the reception(like a mobile phone) and also the load on the server and because of this the download speeds you get will vary.
For instance sometimes in off-peak times I could get a download rate of around 1mb/s with my o2 dongle at home in Wexford, but then also could be as low as 40kb/s or less :/

Every so often the internet connection wouldn't work at all :o

They're not great, but neither are they as terrible as some people claim them to be. They're a cheap gateway into an internet connection, albeit tempremental and somewhat less reliable connection.

You should do what Irish Goat suggested and test before you buy to see if you think that they'll suit you :)

One other thing to note with them, is that you have to be super careful with usage as if you go over the download allowance, you will really regret it. Most operators charge imo extortionate fees per mb once you go over your allowance and ending up with a bill of over €200 euro for one month is a very easy thing to do. You have to be super careful :(
