Drama Soc - why so serious?

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to post. I really wanna join some form of acting society but the only one seems to be the drama soc. Is the name accurate? Is it only dramatic or has it evolved into a more diverse outfit? Is there any writing/improv or does it stick to the script of whatever play has been chosen. I have this notion that every year it's just 'The Playboy of the Western World' or Hamlet but I admit it is based on nothing but parodies of 'acteurs'.

I really would like to get into acting, and I would be interested in doing dramatic stuff but the main thing I want to do is bounce comedic ideas with like-minded people and see what we come up with and then act out original stuff.

Is drama soc the right place for this? If not, is there any other soc or unofficial group that do this?

Full disclosure: I've been watching a bit of fry and laurie and basically want to be both of them really hard.

I was watching Fry & Laurie too! Left me wishing DCU had some sort of comedy/improv society. I believe drama soc does occasional improv workshops and the like, but the main focus seems to be on drama.
I joined it in first year, on the promise of technical workshops (lighting, mics etc.) but found there to be little if any. (Not knocking drama soc, just wasn't suited to my interests)
