Is it possible to replace a zip?

This seems the best place to ask!

The zip on my jacket broke off - the whole fastener bit (not the teeth running down either side). Would it be possible to buy a new zip and put it on? Where could I buy one?

    Cheers

I'm fairly sure it is. Finding a zip the exact length of your jacket might be the tricky part. Hickey's sell zips as do most sewing/fabric type shops.

You need to rip the stitches attaching the zip to your jacket a resew the new one in. This can be done by hand but if you/the mammy/the granny has one it'll be an awful lot easier to re-sew.

Yeah, it's very easy to replace a zip, I've done it loads. Zips that come in most jackets these days are cheap and rubbish. Best place in Dublin, with a big selection of zips is the Woolen Mills shop on the quays. But if you don't sew, you might be better off bringing in somewhere to be done professionally. Anywhere that does alterations will be well able to sort you out, and they'll get the right zip for you and everything.

... no, I said the teeth of the zip are perfectly intact. It's just that the fastener thing has popped off. The two strips that are attached to the jacket itself are still there.

You'll still need to replace the whole zip. If the closure thing has come off it means you're missing the stopper at the bottom, which can't be welded back on! A new zip, if you're going to put it on yourself will probably cost about €7, depending on the length of it.

Nope, it's still there! The fastner just sort of broke off. Cheap O'Neills piece of crap!

Well if it's just the dangly bit that's fallen off, you might be able to pull it apart enough to put it back on, then clamp it together using a pliers or something. It'll most likely go again though. if the dangly bit has snapped, well then you will probably need to replace the whole zip.

Just look for one on an old bag or jacket. Swop it over try to recycle the end stopper from the donor zip and your sorted.
