I recently purchased a 2009 Car and I am finding it very hard to get rid of a bad Cigarette smell caused more than likely by its previous owner,I wonder would anybody out there who might have experienced a similar problem in the past recommend anything to me that might help or solve the issue,I have tried a couple of different air freshners and while they have improved the situation the smell still remains over a month later, any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

The entire interior including the roof lining would need to be shampoo'd to get rid of it quickly, failing that you could try spraying Fabreeze all over the interior and this will remove it over time.

All windows and doors need be left open at every opportunity for a few weeks at least.

Alternatively you could hide a bit of fish somewhere to mask the smell of cigarettes.

I smoke in my motor and there is never a smell! Filthy smokers. :D. Febreeze the living hell out of it a few times and litter it with a few magic trees.

Meguires do a spray for getting rid of ciggie and dog smells and it's brilliant. Comes in a yellow coloured spray bottle.

Not anymore ;) It's now in a black bottle with trigger spray. It's a lot better than the one in the yellow bottle and is still called Odor Eliminator.

A lot of odour removal products in the shops really only mask the smell.

Have a read of this here http://www.bmw-driver.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26021

So2pure or cleanair (similar products) work best at removing bad odours, but an interior valet may be your best option before applying an air purifier.

Whats that old trick of putting an onion into a smelly fridge to absorb the bad odors?

Would it work for cars too?

As a former smoker who used to share a truck with a non smoker I got pretty handy at disguising the smell of fags (God I miss the fags...). A bottle of Fabreeze is your friend here. Spray it on the cabin/pollen filter, also turn on the aircon, spray a good lash of fabreeze in to the car, then close the doors and let her running for a few minutes. I used to find the biggest problem was the ash going in the air vents, turn the fan up high to blow it out and clean it off. I used to do this three times a week for over two years. The guy I was sharing with didn't realise I smoked until I met him in the yard one night after filling diesel. Every night I parked up I nearly did a mini valet. It worked though....

My last car was the same. In the end I took out the back seats and scrubbed them, scrubbed the front seats. The biggest stink was from the headliner, which was manky with tar above the drivers seat, which I again scrubbed. You need to scrub everything, door trims etc, with a little bit of soapy water.

Spraying fabrez or such is only hiding the smell for a short time as the smoke is in the material. Though I suppose if the person wasn't a heavy car smoker they may work, but it didn't for mine.

Trick I've heard is to put a bowl / basin of vinegar in the car overnight, should absorb it. No idea how true this is.

Another one is the onion, chopped up v.small on a plate...

Be sure to thoroughly wash the ashtray - I've heard vinegar is a good one for this.

I had a similar problem. Anyone know how to get rid of the smell of onions from a car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭volvoman480

Apparently smoking a few packs of ciggies in your car will completely remove the smell of onions......

Ok, apparently the smell of smoke left in a car is a bacteria. (Had a chat with a fella who has done valeting for the last 30 years).

The only, sure way,to get rid of the smell of smoke in a car is to clean everything. Windows, roof, carpet, etc. etc.

You don't need to drown it in other smelly stuff because all that is doing is putting a cover over it, not getting rid of it. You're only wasting your time hanging 50 air fresheners out of the mirrors.

Bacteria in smoke is hardly correct. In cigarettes, yes, i doubt in smoke. Bacteria are hardy but do not live in a 700 degree fire.

Maybe bacteria wasn't the correct technical term, but I'm sure you get the idea.

One thing it does show is that smoking is pretty friggin' manky.

Start smoking OP, you won't notice the smell anymore.

We do. Over time the tar and smoke adheres to the fabric and other materials inside the car, just like smoking a kipper etc.

Lemon slices left in the car should do the trick.

OR, you could have your car fogged. That's what the main-dealers do to remove the odour of cigarettes from car interiors. It involves placing a fogging machine into the interior and turning it on. This machine releases a fog of cleaning chemical, much like smoke, that literally penetrates every nook and cranny and neutralises and kills the smell. It utilises a citrus vapour agent that is specifically designed to remove the odour of cigarettes. The car is then vented, and voila. Incidentally, I own a fogging machine....

Shake some baking soda into a dish and leave it in the footwell for a few days, should take out most of the stale smell. You can shake some over the upholstery too, but be sure to hoover it out within an hour or you end up with a lovely dusty white arse!!
