My Toshiba Satellite Pro L670 has recently begun shutting down instantly, it happened when I bought a new game. I think this is an overheating problem. Can anybody recommend a way of solving this problem without having to take it into a shop.

Unplug and remove the battery, get a hoover and put the nozzle up against the cooling slots on the underside of the laptop for a couple of minutes. This will get rid of most of any dirt around the cooling fan.

I did that with the hoover last night but it still switched off on my when I ran a game on it.
Does anybody know how to remove the front cover that has the keyboard on it, I undid all the screws but I cant get it off, I dident want to pull too hard. We had building work done recently and the house was filled with dust, the laptop was put away for most of this but there is still a lot of dust in the house and from what I could see the inside of the laptop was full of dust. I managed to get some out with the hoover and a hair dryer but I would love to get the cover off and give it a good dusting.
I know I am playing with fire doing this but I am willing to take the risk.

Had an overheating problem with a HP laptop. I sorted it with a laptop cooler pad.

I'd recommend the 'Cooler Master Notepal U2' as you can adjust the cooling fans to exactly where it's needed. It reduced temps from 100+ C to a steady 50 C for me. It's less than £20 on Amazon so cheaper than a visit to the repair shop.

I'd also check if you have one of the overheating nvidia graphics chips. Just google "nvidia overheating problem" for all the info you need. It's a return/replacement job if you have it as the chips will break eventually even with cooling so hope you're lucky.
