We (Tralee BC ) did a spin from Tralee to Dublin yesterday, but when I tried to upload my 705 to Garmin Connect, it gave an error, the same TCX file wont load in Ascent either, either from sync of manual upload from the desktop.

As it was a long cycle 300KM, the file is 37mb which I suspect is causing the problem, anybody encounter this before ? Any solutions apart from a fecking sledgehammer ?

I get "corrupt" tcx files all the time. Usually powering off and re-connecting to the computer will cause the Garmin to re-write the file. Failing that, have a read of http://blog.stephenryan.ie/2009/11/fixing-a-corrupt-tcx-file-the-easy-way/ which always works.

Saying the above, 37M is a massive file. Even with per second recording, HR and Power data, my files rarely pass 10M, and that includes events like the W200.

My garmin edge 500 seems to freeze if I do a course that I have previously uploaded from bike route toaster or ridewithgps. Were you following a course?

    Ryaner,

Thanks a mill for that, great app, it seems to be almost there, only last glitch is that its saving out as a text edit file and not a TCX, and adding a tcx extension doesn't work either, but its close to being sorted, the resulting file is a more realistic 6.7mb

Ashleey, nope not a course, just a simple trip, albeit a 300km one, ah its not the end of the world anyway. FWIW the 500 is a more finished product IMO, I got the 705 just when they first came out, and whilst its pretty good most of the time, you can see it was probably rushed to market a bit too quickly. I'll be getting a 500 for next season definitely.

Have you all updated your software on the devices you are having problem with?

I had similar problems but garmin brought out a fix for it with the updates.

There should be an option on the menu for saving the file as a TCX. On large files, the app does tend to look like it has locked up. XML (what TCX files are) is not made for large files so can be really slow.

Latest software and everything. It never has a problem if you follow a course that was created from an activity in Training Centre though. As an aside mac lion has rendered training centre useless and garmin don't bother to respond to emails.

Yeah, I selected the 'save as TCX' option but it still saved out as a Text Edit file, its only a small glitch I reckon, I'll have another crack at it tomorrow.

Ashleey, yeah fully updated, good to know about Lion though, might keep one machine on Leopard for the time being.

It's all fine on win7 on the same mac so it's not hardware. I think only use courses that you have created in TC from previous activities and also clear out old activities to keep the free memory up. It's not perfect but it beats wheel magnets etc

Right lads - lost a spin today, and I'm sure it has about 10 Strava KOMs on it*. Basically I tried to upload but forgot to stop the timer which I think introduced the bug.

I've followed the blog in the link above, but haven't a clue how to "Copy this GPX to your computer." - using Garmin connect doesnt give the option?

I'm a bit thick, so any help welcome.

Edit: Its actually an Edge 500. And I don't think it's crappy. Yet.
    *this is a lie

had a similar problem recently. First, connect the Garmin to your PC - you can explore the contents of it just like a phone or USB drive or portable disk. Copy the file in question (will be editted day of cycle) onto your PC. What I did then was go to forums on Garmin website. There's a thread there about corrupt files, I zipped my fille and attached it to a post, and within an hour some kind soul had sorted it for me! Granted the fixed file said it was done on an Edge 800 and it lost cadence I think, but everything else was fine!

    Here's the thread

God, I really am thick, didnt even think of clicking into the USB.

Anyway, got a .fit file which won't convert using the TCX convertor. I'll try the thread you posted - thanks!
