I was thinking the Hill running guys may have some good input here as I know a fair few have experience in this area but also OS would be another good place to enquire

Isn't ocnoc an orienteer? He posts regularly enough on the imra thread and might have some useful advice for you.

If you are serious in your quest then weekend orienteering is the way to go. There are events on most weekends in Munster and Leinster. Have a look at the fixture list at orienteering.ie and see if there is anyone who can get you to a number of these. Any club would only be delighted for you to join and there would be a wealth of experience there that you could tap into.
Make sure you start on the simplest course and progress only when you feel comfortable.
Schools orienteering tends to be fairly straightforward, so running ability is a must to do well.

    Good luck.

    Howya,

3 blocks to become World School Champion

    - Mental
    - Physical
    - Technical

Firstly - whats your level? Just Schools Orienteering or do you venture out to the weekend stuff? Or maybe your a Junior Squad runner?

You have to be mentally strong to react to the map and your changing environmental. O'ing is a b*tch of a sport. We race in stuff most people wouldn't even have nightmares of running in. You have to be mentally strong to be able to keep a cool head when the pressure is on. Unlike in a road race where the pressure is when to make your move, you have that, plus route choice, attackpoints, contours, do you climb now or later, planning ahead on where you'll run, control flow to keep speed up and thinking about where your going to put your foot in 5 steps time or you may break your neck.
So thats the mental aspect - stay 100% focused when the blood is more needed in your legs. If you find the balance on running speed and orienteering speed your sorted... assuming your fit enough

No 2. Fitness. If you want to win, you have to have speed. You also need strength.
However, its not track speed you want. You need speed in terrain and the strength you want is strength to pull your legs out of bog and heather as you continue to run up hill into the wind... and you need endurance to keep up the speed and strength.... and this is assuming your going in the right direction!

No 3. Know where you are, know where you want to go and have a plan on how to do it. Sounds simple doesn't it :)
Now add the pressure, its a race scenario and every second counts.

And that explains how all 3 are linked.

Train physically - join an athletic club
    Train mentally - http://o-training.net/w/
Train technically - get out on a map and practice

Don't look to win, look to have a perfect race. If you run flat out and make no mistakes - you will win.

I could tell you that in the schools you are racing guys that can run a 16min 5km and has been to international orienteering races and has won!
That would have you thinking about who else is at the start line and not on your own race.

Get in contact with a club - they will give you better guidance that someone online.

PM me or ask here if you have any questions - I realise that this was slightly rambling.

Also - Outdoor Purists? Are you for real? They are mostly hikers.
There's more than one orienteer on this pages, IMRA thread should be the one stop shop for anything mountain related.
Sure if it wasnt for orienteers, IMRA wouldn't exist :)

I found some of your results.
Scratch the above. If you can orienteer in West Cork and do alright against 2 of the top Juniors in the country - your well on your way to fighting for a position at the National champs - never mind the schools.

    I'll email you
