It can be OS fault or just about any hardware component failure...

Was it working before?Any new drivers, updates, hardware installed recently?

0X24 messages usually occur due to system files being corrupted.
Have you got a win xp disc you can use to get into the recovery console? From there run chkdsk /f to check your drive. This should automatically check your says files and repair if necessary.

hi guys, yes now i think of it an update was being downloaded when the system shut down [temp power cut], after that problem started.
    now, where to start ?

Was the file just downloading or was it actually installing when the power cut occurred? If it was installing it has more than likely corrupted one or more system files.

If you have your Windows XP disk you'll need to boot into the recovery console and run chkdsk /f

Switch on your PC, then after POST press F8 repeatedly. From the menu choose last known good configuration.

This may save the day. ;)

That blue screen can happen when a hard drives gone dodgy, now you say the computer is not even detecting the hard drive so I think its safe to assume the hard drives gone! Did you hear any clicking noise coming from the machine when the BSOD appeared?

Do you still get a message saying cannot find any drive? Not a good sign if thats the case, Take the drive out of the machine and try in another, incase its a different issue, sounds to me like the hard drives totally knackered :(

    BIOS detects the hard drives?

Has the screen gone blue? You might need to check your BIOS settings and CMOS settings too. It could be a fault in the OS system and you may need to reinstall it again, could be just that you need to update drivers like another poster mentioned! Otherwise take it to a PC Technician they might help.

thanks for the help guys, im not a techie so jus to let u know if i insert a disc into the drive nothin happens so recovery disc wont help.if theres a step by step way of doin things from the set up menu ill give it a go. jus wanna try cos its an old desk top and if push comes to shove ill invest in a lappy rather than a repair, thanks again all
