My teeth are not that straight due to the lack of space in my mouth. I was thinking of getting braces to fix this however my friend has them and despises them. I'm currently in 6th year and will be in college next year. I was wondering could i get them even just for a year? Thanks.

Best go talk to an orthodontist, some do free quick looks but a proper assessment with X-rays will cost a few very worthwhile bob. Without knowing your clinical situation nobody here can give you good advice.

If you just want them for a year, you would be an ideal candidate for 12 month braces, look up www.12monthbraces.ie:D:D

    Hi there

Best to go to an orthodontist and get an opinion. For a simple or mild case, it could be done in 12 months.

Look up www.orthodontics.ie or talk with a freind or family member who had treatment

Wow thanks a million for the answers! Yea I've an appointment booked for Oct 1st the only thing is I get this feeling the orthodontist will tell me to get them regardless to get more money

In regards to my situation my teeth are white and kinda straight but one canine is struggling to find enough space to get in line with my other teeth. It's just the thought of having braces in college that scares me :(

Yeah, the Ferrari dealer is going to tell you to buy a Ferrari but you're there by your own free will.....
If you go for an orthodontic consultation, you have an issue with how your teeth look... The orthodontist will give the options but after that it's all your choice, no one ever died from crooked teeth....!!!

    Hi Wesc

I'm almost 24 and only getting my braces on now!

When I was in college a lot of people had braces and most of my friends didn't even notice them! I noticed everyone's teeth though because I was so aware of my own!!

If your only reason to not get them is because your going to college, don't let that stop you. Would you rather get them after college when your starting a career?

It was a huge step for me to start to process but I'm glad I did and wish I hadn't waited so long!! :)

Thanks again for the replies :) I've decided I'll try to get the invisalign clear braces. I was at the orthodontist 2 days ago and i think i should only need them for 15 months. Still a bit expensive but what can you do! Strangely looking forward to having perfect teeth already!:D

Get ordinary metal brackets and wires, much cheaper and you will be finished sooner ;)

Best of luck you wont regret it.

Wesc can you keep us up to date with your progress as i too would be interested in getting invisalign.

My mrs cousin has them an she loves them although her teeth looked perfect already to me. Big plus the fact you cant even notice her wearing them!!

Any way let us know how you get, best of luck!!!

Me too, I'm 25 and got them on a month ago. Im so happy I got them but wish I did it when the teeth first started to go a bit crooked. Because I have an over bite I only have bottom brace at the moment with a guard on top to stop me biting on the bottom, will get the top ones (tooth coloured) in About 6 months when the top and bottom teeth meet.

As regards the invisalign, 12 month and 6 month braces, I think it totally depend on the individual. These are generally only for people with one tooth sticking out as opposed to a full mouth of crooked teeth which would require fixed metal braces.

This is what I'll be like after the treatment :D

Ok so in about 2 weeks I'll be getting them in. Getting Invisalign on top and metal on the bottom :) I'll let yee know how it goes :) Is it wrong to be strangely excited? :p

That sound very strange are your sure? Is it not ceramic brackets on the top and metal on the bottom. Dont think clear aligners (gum shields or invasalign) work well with opposing standard braces??????

Oh well they could be ceramic it's just I don't really know the difference

I am in the same situation as the OP, I have an appointment on the 19th of November, I just want my top teeth straight, Wesc, if you could pm me and let me know how much you got them for i'd appreciate that. Thanks

Got them in today....Clear on top, metal on bottom. Starting to regret getting them but I suppose I'll eventually get used to them:) One thing I'll say is it's kind of strange having clear on top and metal on bottom. IMO you'd be better off getting all clear or in the end all metal would'nt be too bad.

Oh, and mind them! I already have one loose

    Regretting them already??

You definitely won't when you see progress! I have my braces on 3.5months and have ceramic on top and bottom and my teeth are so straight already! Gives you such a buzz! I cannot wait to have a smile I am proud of when they come off!

I'm 23 by the way and its not an issue. So many people have braces, its not even noticed! :D

Thanks :) Yeah that was just an after reaction I'm happy to have them in...It just takes a while to get used to your new teeth :p

Its so hard to eat though!! My orthodontist told me to brush my teeth during school after lunch but I can't see that happening

Perhaps you're too immature for what you have just signed up for.

What?, Orthoman is your practice limited exclusively to mature adults, how many patients have you said "sorry you are too immature for this treatment" to?.

OP be guided by the orthodontist, there is nothing worse than someone who has undergone extensive and expensive treatment, then when the brackets and bands are removed, there are multiple cavities underneath. You can get fold up tooth brushes like the ones in airport dispenser machines and small tubes of toothpaste that fit easily in a small purse, it will only take a minute. to do.

Same here pal, my bottom one's are on bout 2.5 months and I can see the difference already. Had them tightned twice and am bleeding delighted with the progress.

People always say ''Oh youve got braces'' which to me translates as '' I know myself my teeth are in bits but im too immature and image conscious to do anything about it'' so just call them a buck tooth and tell them to jog on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭Wesc.

I got the bracket back on again. What happened was that it just wasn't properly stuck in and I bit on it so it moved a little.

Btw I do floss my teeth during school it's just I don't bring toothpaste in as I go to an all boys school and the bathroom standards are shocking!..The tap doesn't run properly either like:p And I'm not by any means immature!

Im getting by at the moment though...new diet may not taste nice but is effective! Potato Waffles ftw

Oh I suppose I should update on my progress sorry i forgot :o

Well basically, my teeth were fully straight after 5 weeks, yes, 5 weeks! Orthodontist said my teeth had a remarkable improve meant and as it turns out I might have them out by the start of college! Absolutely delighted with getting them, they're absolutely no hassle and tbh the clear braces aren't even that noticable. Hopefully I'll get them out soon now :D

Oh and btw would anyone know around how long I should have them on after them being fully straight? Thanks!

I'd say your orthodontist might know!!
He/she knows your teeth and specific situation and you are paying them some money so why not ask them????

Got braces two days ago aged 40yr..... Just want to ask: is it common for orthodontist to be a bit vague on the final price?? Have been told it won't cost any more than "x" amount but it could cost less as treatment could possibly finish sooner depending on how the treatment goes!!

That would be quite unusual. Normally you will have an exact quote for the total fee, inclusive of all appliances, visits, retainers etc, given to you before any active treatment starts. There will also be an agreed payment schedule / instalment plan at the outset.

It sounds like you are being charged a certain price per visit, but of course you have no way of knowing how many visits you will have in total. Is that right? Will you be charged for extra, unscheduled visits to repair a loose bracket or a sharp wire, for example?

Like I say, that would be an unusual way to structure treatment fees. Is it a registered specialist orthodontist you're attending?

Yep they are registered!! The orthodontist said that there is a ceiling on the amount i will be paying and it won't go above this even if the treatment takes longer than 2years but it could be less than this amount if I finish the treatment earlier but he said there really is no way of knowing!! I can call in anytime if I have any problems at no extra cost an everything is included. So this is normal?? I wil be billed/invoiced quarterly!

I would see no problem with this. Sounds like your orthodontist is trying to take the fear away from you thinking he will deliberately lengthen the treatment by offering you a 'maximum ceiling' price but letting you know that it may not come to that. I tend to do that with patients to allow them to budget as well as possible before starting treatment. Not the way everyone does it, but suits some people well.

Thanks for the reply. I am happy with the treatment I have received to date!! Its a long way to go and I can't wait to see an improvement!! I know it will be money well spent but it is still a lot and it was not an easy decision to make!!
