Do we need a President?

No obvious candidates, what does such a person actually do apart from the perfunctory hand-shaking, attending functions and sporting events, and spouting soundbites provided by speech writers.

If the office was discontinued, people would still go to work every day, the sun would still rise and go down, etc, etc, similar analogy applies to the Eurpoean monarchies etc.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this.

The president is our chief diplomat and is a figurehead for the country. We cant have people from the government meeting and greeting every foreign dignitary or head of state that comes to visit.

As long as you mind your P's and Q's ,it's the type of job anybody could do but overall not all that important .Rubbing shoulders with the great and good seems to be the main appeal of the job .

Pointless waste of money to be honest. We have a Taoiseach and they could easily do the "job" of the president in there spare time.

+1. We need someone without any political baggage and a lot of charisma.

Throw up a poll there sure.

Personally I'm beginning to think the office is a waste of money and it along with the senate, should be scrapped. The only reason I'll be voting in this year's "I'm a Celebrity put me in the Aras" is to keep out FG, FF or SF candidates.

Add a poll OP, be easier seeing the poll than reading all the thread ;)

Sufferin' Jasus! Just read where the Bearded Cookie Monster has become a phoenix. Where's my scatter-gun? Does this guy not realise what the tabloids (in other countries) will print? Has he got no shame? No dignity? If his resignation from the race was caused by, er, his own hand ........ has the problem gone away? Or have society's mores changed so quickly?

Give it time, Simon Cowell will come up with some idea like that! :pac:

If that's the case, can we make Cheryl Cole the president? I'd stand to attention for her . . . :D

Obama seems to manage to juggle it with his day job okay and he has a bigger country to preside over ?

And we are going to achieve this through former/current politicians participating in an electoral process under the banner of their respective political parties ?

Ah now. One step at a time. Most of them have struggled with just their main job.

Yes we do need a President, someone who is above politics, as decreed by our constitution. We need someone who can represent us with dignity abroad and someone who can assure us individually and as communities that we are of value. We need someone who can relate to all strata of society and it needs to be someone that people can relate to as genuine, approachable and honest. Mary McAleese has done a wonderful job under these headings even though many of us knew very little of her prior to the election of 1997 (myself included).
