For the last while I can only access google.co.uk

google.ie just gives the message 404 not found.

Also the adress bar quick search feature is rendered useless as it seems to be defaulted to google.ie and so the same 404 message appears.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but with no joy.

Any ideas as I'm sure it must be some simple setting that is wrong

Try clearing the Cache/history data in the browser. You'll find this in the browser options-"Under the bonnet"

Is this the case with all browsers on your machine or just Chrome?

It sounds like a DNS issue. Try changing your DNS entries on your router to those provided by OpenDNS.

    Primary: 208.67.222.222
    Secondary: 208.67.220.220

Make sure the site isn't being blocked in the Windows hosts file, open notepad and navigate to c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and open hosts, if you see an item like 127.0.0.1 www.google.ie remove it and others thats are possibly blocked too for whatever reason

You might have the google.co.uk blocked. Check your active x controls to unblock it.

Active X controls is a pop up option to allow you to view a website that is blocked. You can download active X manager if you don't have it and it will sort that out for you. You have the option as part of your internet options I think as well when you go into tools, internet options you get an applet of tabs and options there. It could be just your firewall could have it blocked too. Check settings out. If Active X is downloaded already you can just go to your start menu and find it in the list of programme options.

With respect, this isn't helping the OP. Active X has nothing at all to do with this issue.

Apologies ;) ActiveX is a Microsoft technology built into Internet Explorer and pritty much unused nowadays, Chrome doesn't support Active X applications :)

Ah forgot that, active x only works on IE browser not Chrome. Could be just a DNS problem then. Could be your network provider as a broken link with the server for the website between websites server and your internet broadband server. Could be just your firewall has blocked it. Check that the link isn't a broken link. Sometimes if the phone line and broadband line is down on either parties side then there could be an issue with the website.

A 404 message usually means the HTTP page or server is not found so its likely to be a server problem than anything.
