Registered self employed but no work

Hey there. I'm just hoping someone can help me out on this one. I'll ring the tax office tomorrow if I can get an answer here... but just to put my mind at ease. I registered as self employed with the tax office in November 2010. It was a little pre-emptive of me... I was hoping some freelance work would come in, but it didn't. It wasn't until mid 2011 that I actually got work. I was on social welfare until this point. Do I have to file a return for 2010 despite the fact that I earned nothing? It seems obvious enough a no, but you never know with Irish systems.

I'm pretty sure you do, not 100% though..

You must file. Otherwise you will incur penalties.

You will need to file a 2010 return as you were registered as self employed in 2010.

If you did not make a gain then you must have made a loss......

If you commenced in 2010, you have an extra year to file your first return i.e. you have until 31/10/2012, at which point you'll be due to file returns for both 2010 & 2011.

However, as you had no trade income in 2010 it should be a very simple exercise so you should probably get it sorted sooner rather than leave it on the long finger...!

Rang tax office yesterday with this same query, business started mid 2010.

Do not have to file return until Oct 2012 under commencement of business rules but better to get it in sooner, I intend doing it in Jan 2012 for 2010 & 2011 figures. Disadvantage of delaying is if you have a large tax liability you will end up paying practically 3 yrs in Oct 2012, (2010 tax, 2011 tax & preliminary tax for 2010). Won't change the overall amount but might make it less painful.
