Hey folks. I have an ipod classic 160GB here, it won't boot. I've tried holding in menu and select to reboot, no joy. It gives a 'use itunes to restore' message on the ipod. When I connect it, I usually have to reboot and then it's picked up (and I've tried on two pcs and a mac), it shows as "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.".. I click restore, it works away but it hangs itunes. Is there any hope for it? Should I assume the hard drive is gone on it? The ipod data shows with software version 1.1.2 and shows a serial number, but the capacity shows as n/a. While itunes is hanging, the ipod displays 'do not disconnect'. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a way to run the diagnostics on the classics, but I can't remember it. Have a look at the support part of the Apple website and you should find out how to do it.

The fix for this is to format the iPods drive using disk utility in mac os.. You must format as mac os x journaled and write 1s or 0s to the disk and it will allow you restore in iTunes the issue is caused by pulling out the USB rather then ejecting correctly.

I found a few sites suggesting holding select, ff, menu and rew to run diagnostics, but not the apple site itself. Will try that, thank you

I've never tried formatting in mac (it's new to me) but will certainly try this! Thanks!
