The water pressure died in our house tonight.... I went to the garage where the power is supplied to the pump etc... we have a transparent filter on pump side of the supply (water purification system)...it appeared there was air bubbles flowing in the water!!??

I killed the power.. waited 1 min and turned it back on.... no more bubbles... and zero pressure..... took a look at the well (160/180 foot well) and there didn't seem to be any activity.... it's dark and wet outside.. but as far as I could see no leaks at the well side... :(

Anyone know of a company open on Sundays selling pumps? Am I to assume the pump is knackered?... I doubt the well has run dry!

    Cheers.... T

You dont mention what kind of system you have (submersible or surface), how old it is.

If you can find a electrician, you can ask him to check the following:

Make sure the system is getting mains power (duh!).

Check the pressure switch. It may be blocked by dirt.

Check the control box...has the cutoff tripped and if not, is the pump getting two live feeds.

If all that fails, then you'll need to find a pump specialist.

Sorry you're correct.. I assumed my profile displayed my location. Anyway I'm south Cork.. and its a 5 year old submersible pump. It is getting power (I wired my house so know every inch of circuitry)... But I haven't checked actual current. Will do that in morning.

I had a plumber repair a leak at the top of the well 2 months ago. There is an aluminum cap or plate that sits on the well with a 90 degree connection. There was a leak under this "cap"... I wonder if he cut a bit of the alcathene going down to the pump when he remade the connection?? There is also a rope going to.the pump.which I assume takes the majority of the weight? If he shortened the alcathene and didn't take up the slack on the rope I wonder if the pump has worked loose?? I assume when it starts up there is some twisting due to centrifugal force?

Still a job for the morning. Hope the family.don't draw too much on the toilets tonight!!

Just wondering if there is someone on a Sunday who could help me? :(

    Cheers.

Well now I'm an expert! :D (not quite)....

I pulled the submersible pump out of the ground and found there was a brass type fitting (don't know name/type) that has sheared off! Half of the thread was still in the receptacle..... it looked like it was corroded...

I called a lad here in Cork who specialise in well boring.. he gave me directions to his house and sorted me with spares! Sound man...
This is his compnay website : http://www.waterwelldrillersireland.ie/

MODS: if plugging good companies is not allowed please snip the link.... It's just this lad opened his workshop for a random punter on a Sunday morning... fair play.

Pictures describe the problem better than me... see below... so anyone looking for an expert in submersible pumps I'm your man on Sundays and bank holiday weekends... LOL....

Could this be a brass / stainless steel problem? There was a post about this regarding water storage tanks and well water and I am looking for an answer if this is really a problem. My bore hole pump is all stainless with a stainless compression joint. If they (you) fitted the pump using the old brass fitting maybe this caused the failure due to the differing metals. Please advise.

You might have a look at this...it may not be relevant, but there again, it might!

Glad to hear you got sorted...and fair play to the guy who opened on a Sunday.

Thats the thing about wells I always wonder how often the water should be tested for quality or what the water contains.

Personally I had mine tested once a year for last 4 years.. this year I failed for bacterial. A cleaning with a bottle of Milton Fluid and installed UV lamp ( plus filter and pH neutralization ) fixed it..

It was €90 for bio and chemical analysis. Or.just 35 for the bio check.... I normally get the full test to be sure to be sure... :)

I think you should get the bio done every 6 months.... but.....
