I have been told that my laser card which is cirus/mastero and visa will not work in atms over in thailand because its not chip and pin, if this is true im screwed as im off on hols and get paid when im over there, i also have no other way of accessing my cash, this is very archaic by BOI if this is true

BOI Laser cards have been chip and pin since 2007, I'd be surprised if yours doesn't have one. Have you checked?

Does your card have the magnetic stripe on the back? This should work even if the chip doesn't.

Well surely that would be archaic of Thailand rather than BOI? :-)

Your card has both the chip and the magnetic stripe so it should work fine. You may want to notify the bank so they don't think your card is stolen and put a stop on it when it's used in Thailand.

I mentioned it to them alright, they said that was only the case with credit cards

Hi op, I was in Thailand during February and March of this year and was able to use my Bank of Ireland Laser Card to withdraw cash no problem. So I reckon you have either been misinformed or they have recently changed their policy on it.

I'd say you were misinformed totally especially for they to tell you that your Visa won't work. Is your Visa with another bank? because I don't think Bank of Ireland actually offer Visa Credit Cards, I have a Mastercard myself from BOI and that also worked in Thailand both for transactions and cash withdrawal.

Chip and Pin is wherby you enter your pin number and your credit card should have a little brass coloured microchip imbedded near the end of it. I also used Chip and Pin in Thailand and all you need do is insert the card like home and enter your pin no.

However the downside to using a Laser card was I found I was limited to a 10,000THB withdrawal limit and each transaction also charges 150bt which is a Thai levy. I used my Laser card once or twice and found it awfully expensive to withdraw cash getting charged nearly €8.50 ontop of my withdrawal which was a ripoff compared to the Mastercard fees.

I would suggest you try get a Credit Card if you have enough time because a Credit Card is invaluable when you go abroad like that as Laser Cards are really only good for cash withdrawals within the Eurozone where they attract no fee, you can't use them for online purchases except with a few Irish sites and most certainly don't expect to be able to go into a Bangkok restaurant or shopping mall and be able to pay by Laser, you'll have to use it to go to the ATM and withdraw the Baht first and then pay by Cash.

just back, BOI cards work fine so dont worry, u can even use your laser if your flying through abu dhabi, you were given the completely wrong information, and i have to say i dont think anyone in BOI or AIB know anything about using cards abroad because for the past 2 years everytime i ring up i get told something different, especially last year when i ran up a massive phone bill trying to find out why i could only withdraw 60e! the answers ranged from it depends on the country your in to it depends on the countrys bank to i dont know
