Ford Focus 1.8 tdci bottom end rod knocking

    Hi,
My 07 Ford Focus 1.8 tdci (90K) has suddenly developed a terrible knocking noise. No warning lights or loss of power. (had to drive it home). Noise sees to be coming from down low at the rear of the engine, by gearbox. I thought it might be the DMF, but had a friend, with mechanical knowlege, have a look at it and he reckons it's bottom-end rod knocking, and I'll need a new engine.

1: Any ideas on what my best options are?

2: Should I try source a 2nd hand engine or would it be wiser getting a rebuild?

3: What are the likely cost of both of the above.

    Cheers lads.

Source a scrapped engine tbh. If something broke inside or it ran out of oil by being low or clogging you wouldnt know whats wrong with it. Try Traynors in the North

Get it diagnosed properly is the obvious thing surely?

Unless you've been driving around with no oil in the engine for long periods then there would be no reason for a big end to have failed.

Thanks Nissan Doctor, I will of course get it diagnosed properly but I'm just planning for the worst-case scenario. And no I haven't been driving around without any oil and that was the first thing I checked - it was a bit black though! I would agree that there would be no good reason for the big end to fail, but it does sound like a very loud hammering and is blowing a bit of white smoke.

Well big end failure can't cause smoke of any kind. Also if there was any oil starvation issue(failed pump etc) the first the oil light would be on and second, the top end will get noisy before the big ends would fail.

I think DMF is a very likely cause of your noise tbh...

DMF is what I would have thought it was, as it's a common fault with this engine. Still an expensive problem to rectify. If this is the problem Doc, would I be better advised to go for a SMF kit ? I think Valero do a clutch and SMF kit.
    Thanks for the input :).

It will certainly be alot cheaper to buy and despite what some say, a SMF won't have any effect on any other componants.
