The Beatles, Maximo Park, Biffy Clyro and Dream Theater all have excellent lyrics in my opinion.

Sabbat have the best lyrics in metal/rock, Martin Walkyier and Andy Sneap are lyrical geniuses.

    Taken from 'The Clerical Conspiracy':

"There is no way to fight a foe
    Who strikes from the inside,
And once within we can begin to
    Smite this pagan pride.
We shall take their graven images
And grind them in the dirt,
For that men can live in paradise
    Must be the Devils work."

"Think I'll just fall to pieces, if I don't find something else to do"
That's gotta be one of my favourite lines of all times.

"Your self doubt has your head so turned around there's not a catchphrase that can save you"

...possibly a ska band, but I guess you could call them rock too ;)

"I hit you for the first time today. .... That really hurt you said. Yeah, and you thought you knew me"
    -Whipping Boy

Brilliant. A song where the singer is the guilty party.

    I’d sell my soul,
    My self-esteem a dollar at a time
    For one chance, one kiss,
One taste of you my Magdalena

"Wasn't there a dream last night
    Like a spring never ending
    Still the water runs clear
    Through my mind
On the field I can see a fiddler
The fiddler on the green and the sad boy
    I took him too early
    Would you mind
    Would you mind
    Would you mind
    If I take you "
Fiddler on the Green - Demons and Wizards, probably my favourite track on that album!

I watch in awe as the crucifiers march
Killing time, killing all I see
    Another moon rise, human waste
Screaming 'Why hath thou forsaken me ?

"The Kill" by Napalm Death. Holds the record for the shortest ever song made. I think it's 1.1 seconds or something???

Anything by Neil Peart is genius, also the sardonic wit of Steely Dan is very clever.

The smell was unbearable As I unburied her
I cum blood from my erection
    I feel it run
    down her throat, swallow
    Eyes glassy and vacant

From "I cum blood" by Cannibal Corpse

Nope. 'The Kill' is 23 seconds long, 'You Suffer' is only about 1.1 seconds long although the track is 4 seconds. 'Dead' off FETO is just as short (and straight to the point!)

I think Pink Floyd's Time has my favourite lyrics of all time. Mainly because it's all quite true

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

    Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
    Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells."

she was taking her time, i was losing my mind there was nothing that she wouldn't do.

The following is a true story
Only the names have been changed
    To protect the guilty...

Did we go too far? Is that why your nose is bleeding?
Last night I dreamt we kissed on a bench in the evening.
    (...)
He changed his look for you,
You changed your life for him.
Now, was the verdict worth the trial?

Protest The Hero- C'est La Vie

Stepped off a chair so he could learn to let loose,
learn to let loose before the pendulum wore off
His final sound a gurgle and a cough
And his final words “the pendulum wore off”
Stepped off a building to find concrete evidence,
concrete evidence that he’d ever make an impact
    Fiction splattered into fact
And his fiction splattered into another sidewalk painting on display
Stepped off a bridge so he could make a splash,
to make a splash he had to flounder like a fish out of water
Another lamb that chose the slaughter
Stepped off a chair so he could learn to let loose,
learn to let loose before the pendulum wore off
His final sound a gurgle and a cough
Stepped off a platform and briefly made the news,
made the news and made the trains run fifteen minutes late
Oh what a price to pay to be the author of your fate
The trains were fifteen minutes late (to be the author of your fate)
C’est la vie! A drooling old bitch and a house full of lies
C’est la vie! The little things that kill you make you glad to be alive
C’est la vie! Disease in your genes and ocean levels on the rise
C’est la vie! Sing a song of living before everybody dies

    "Estranged" by Gn'R

The entire song - not just one part. I've been listening to it quite a bit since my Mam died.

When she took your hand in marriage
It didn't mean right across the face
    Small woman, big man
It takes a lot of guts
You're just a pussy in the first place
But now that your wedding chamber's
    The one the bullet's in
Brave man, look at you, not so tough
    When the hammer's cockin'

Exodus - Sealed with a Fist
Steve Souza, some man for lyrics!

Good lyrics? Daniel Gildenlow (Pain Of Salvation). May sound pompous at first but meaningful when you dig into them. Also he seems at ease with many themes, for example 'The Big Machine' nuclear war reflection and 'Sisters' "forbidden" flirting.

Like a bull in a china shop,
But the shelves have all been cleared.

I'd be partial to the lyrics of Randy Blythe. There's some great lines to be found among Lamb of God's songs I reckon.

Anything from Metallica's And Justice For All...
At the moment I'm loving some of Maiden's lyrics:

    These Colours Don't Run

It's the same in every country
    When you say you're leaving
    Left behind the loved ones
    Waiting silent in the hall
    Where you're going lies adventure
    others only dream of
Red and green light this is real
and so you go to war

For the passion, for the glory
For the memories, for the money
You're a soldier, for your country
What's the difference, all the same

Far away from the land of our birth
We fly a flag in some foreign earth
We sailed away like our fathers before
These colours don't run, from a cold bloody war

Here is no one that will save you
    Going down in flames
    No surrender certain death
You look it in the eye
On the shores of tyranny you

    Crashed the human wave
Paying for my freedom with your
    Lonely unmarked graves

For the passion, for the glory
For the memories, for the money
You're a soldier, for your country
What's the difference, all the same

Far away from the land of our birth
We fly a flag in some foreign earth
We sailed away like our fathers before
These colours don't run, from a cold bloody war
