    Hi guys,

looking for a replacement mobo for a sony vaio, model number pcg-7144m. Motherboard model is Hannstar J MV-6 i think. Looked through ebay but no joy. Its an old laptop that i was given, its not powering up and it seems to be the motherboard. wanna fix it up as a little side project for myself. anyone know where i might pick one up?

You might try adverts. I know from experience that it can be tricky getting a motherboard on its own, and even then you would expect to pay close to €200 for a second hand one, which, you will have no idea whether it's working or not until you install it. That can be a messy job too. I've never done a board on a Sony. You are going to want new thermal compound for your CPU. ( lets hope that's not the faulty component!).

Honestly, I would advise you to cut your loses. Selling the laptop as it is on ebay or even adverts might prove to be quite lucrative as Sony screens are much sought after on the second hand market.

If you still wanted to go at it with a screw driver you might take the whole thing apart and eBay all the pieces. Be prepared for some negative feedback as you can't guarantee that any part is even working.

thanks danger_mouse_tm I'm inclined to agree, I'm after remembering fixing one last year, just a simple keyboard replacement and it was an absolute pain to do, had to take apart the whole thing just to fit the keyboard!

So i think ebay it is. I've another Dell Inspiron 1545 to play around with anyway, its got a dodgy graphics which seem to be a common problem with this model. DELL INSPIRON 1545 / 48.4AQ01.011 is the model number of the motherboard, just gonna try and pick up one of them instead!

jrochie What's the problem with old systemboard? It might be cheaper to repair it.
