Opel Zafira Aircon problem

The aircon has stopped working on my 03 Zafira 1.6 petrol. I'm told the clutch on the compressor is not working and as it is not user servicable I'll have to get the whole unit replaced. Opel want €960 to do the job. What are my options??? Someone suggested welding the clutch in the ON position. The aircon would then be on all the time and the compressor running all the time. Is there any danger in this??

You'll eat fuel if you weld it on permanently.

Search boards, there are specialist air con companies which might be a better bet than the main dealer, in the UK you can purchase reconditioned compressors and clutches.

Did they make sure there is gas in the system? If theres no gas the clutch wont engage.

The compressor doesn't normally kick in if the 134a refrigerant pressure
is low in the system...This is controlled by a pressure switch.
Maybe get the system/pressure checked by a aircon specialist and if the compressor has failed then i'd be on the lookout for a secondhand unit or

Had it tested, the gas is full. Guy put 12V to the clutch and nothing.

    Hi Folks

heater has decided to stop working in our 06 Zafira. on trips of 25 mins plus the warm air will work for approx 2 / 3 mins then back to cold. With a house full of kids and the winter coming (xmas) I need a cheap fix if possible.

Are there any obvious things I can check to see if it sorts problem?

    thanks in advance Lads

Hi Nissan Doctor, the blooming coolant was empty - hard to believe as the car was in for a minor service recently (brake pads, oil change + fluid checks etc.,)
The whole coolant unit and pump was changed (€450) about 2 years back by an Opel garage and there is no obvious signs of leaks.

Had the car running for 10 mins and the air is warmer but still not 100%.

Any other advise will be gratefully received.

Run the car fully up to temperature with the expansion bottle cap off. As it gets up to temperature bring the revs up to approx 3000rpm to purge any air from the system, then top up as needed and fit the cap.

    topman thanks. working 100%

just need to sort out the other probs now!

ABS light on permanent and speedo works when it wants.

I seem to be getting nearly every other code though:

    ECN50071/50171/57102/65070/121700/157102/161450/210300/210400/210872/213970/000000

    AND from the Pedal test

0500,0501,0571,0650,1217,1571,1614,2104,2108,2130 - I got explanations to some of these codes from a post here too but some of them are not listed.

If this was a dog I'd take it out and shoot it.....but in fairness to the mule its served us well. 174K on the clock
