Frenectomy questions

I am about a year after orthodontics and have found my two top middle teeth only stay together when im actually wearing my retainer, but once taken out, a gap opens between them quickly. I went to my orthodontist about this and he suggested a frenectomy. I understand roughly what the concept is but have a couple of questions

    - Does it work? I was told it stops the mouth pulling on the teeth, but would it *definitely* keep the teeth closed?

    - Are there any other issues relating to speech, bite etc that might be affected, or other specific issues/risks?

    - Lastly, where would i get this done? i.e. is it a specialist procedure?, Also, how expensive would such a procedure be roughly, 100's, 1000s?.

    Thanks :)

It does not prevent the gap opening in all cases, probably best to get a bonded retainer for that (wire permanently bonded to palatal side of the teeth.

No major risks to the procedure

Best to get this done with an oral surgeon, periodontist or maxillofacial surgeon. Cost will be in the hundreds depending on where you go....

Ask your orthodontist about a bonded retainer is my best advice...

    Thanks for the replies.

I kind of wonder why he suggested a surgical procedure over a simple bonded retainer in that case

I can see how a bonded retainer might affect speech so would be slightly hesitant of that also.

Would a bonded retainer still require a removable retainer to be worn also? The removable one currently isnt doing much except when im actually wearing it.

Nah, a bonded retainer done correctly causes no speech problems. They are a little trickier to keep clean as you can't floss the teeth afterwards. You may still need to wear the removable retainer but probably not every night.
