Gears sticking - clutch or gearbox probem?

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with this problem. I drive a '98 Corolla and recently (last 3 months progressively getting worse) the gears are getting stuck when in low gears, mainly from first to second and sometimes into third, fourth and fifth are fine. When it gets stuck I have to stop, put the car in neutral, put the handbrake on and put it back into first, this always works but isn't ideal when in slow moving traffic.

Just wondering if anyone could advise what it might be, is it gearbox or perhaps the clutch pads? Thanks.

When its stuck, have you tried pumping the clutch pedal? If your slave cylinder is leaking and you are holding on the clutch in traffic it will loose pressure making the gear selection difficult.

I'd be taking a look at the gear linkages, most likely problem given what you are describing.

It sounds more like abovr! Have you checked all fluid levels?

i agree with slave cylinder too.
happened to me, and id rather it be that than the clutch or gearbox.
    much cheaper fix

Yes, all fluid levels look fine and it's not that long since they were checked for the NCT.

I went out today and typical of all days I didn't run into any traffic to try it out! I did keep my foot on the clutch for a bit and when changing gears after that it was stiff so that looks like it could be the problem.

Thanks for all your help, now off to find a decent mechanic!!
