    Hi,

There is a few late vacant places available at a FE college based in dun laoghaire on the dart line. Places have recently come available due to second round cao and last minute cancellations. Plently of people still without a course so might be useful. Most courses lead onto a second diploma year with links to degree courses.

I know there is places in the areas of Creative Multimedia, Interior Design, Garden design, Landscape design and possible a few more. Course are starting next week so you do need to act quick if interested.

Our college and another few in the region also have vacant places. Just wondering what you're staff are attributing this to, besides the cao offers? Applications seem to be down in several areas yet unemployment sky high, apprenticeships non-existent.

How about starting an official plc vacant places thread for colleges to post on?

Having spoken to several FE centres and colleges in the last few weeks the trend seems to be vacant places because of
    • high fees (€200 Government levy on top of whatever the college charges). Some of the colleges charge as much as €200-€300 registration/administration fee thus making it an expesnive option (€500+) for a student to study a FETAC course
    • changes in the grant criteria re distance from the college means that students do not get the same amount as previously
    • high additional fees for kits, uniforms etc (particularly in Beauty, Hairdressing etc)
    • courses that were very Celtic Tiger but now present with no real jobs only emigration
    • more places offering FETAC courses and in shorter timeframes as opposed to having to do the course in an academic year and FAS offering the same qualifications
One interesting fact that arose was the variety in admission policies and requirements. With FAS now coming under the remit of the VECs it begs the question as to whether we should have a central admissions system for FETAC courses in public providers.

Same as last year, we still have spaces available on our CCNA course in Dublin city centre!
If you're successful you end up with an internationally recognised qualification, FETAC certs and advanced entry into DIT. We are a VEC so our fee's are relatively low and you could qualify for a grant.
You can find more information here.
