bought a car (my first car) that has no tax since may 2010 and no nct since 2008. the car was off the road and hasnt been driven for quite some time. Just after insuring it now and im wondering is it ok to drive it home? i cant tax it till it passes an NCT and cant NCT it until its in my name. Where do i stand with relation to getting stopped by the garda?

You can tax it without an NCT. Do you have the new licencing cert yet?

You can tax it no matter if it has NCT or not.

You can NCT it even it's not on your name.

You should have the book by the middle of next week so. WRT whether you can drive it - it all comes down to how lucky you feel.;)

in order to nct it according to the nct website it says if the car has been off the road or not taxed for 3 months the owner must call ncts but im waiting for it to be transferred to my name

This is true, bought a car on a Tuesday and had it in for its nct the following morning and was still in the previous owners name

Ring the NCT with regard to the test and explain it to them.

As with the car, depends on the Guard, some might turn a blind eye others will do you for no NCT or Tax.

Best bet is book the test for whenever the nearest is and chance driving it, if stopped explain the situation and show a receipt and NCT letter, might be okay on the tax.

You don't need the VLC to tax it either. Go to any Garda station, Motor Tax office or public library and get form RF100a. Fill in your name, insurance details, details about the car. Complete Sections 5.1, 5.2 and 5.6. Hand over the fee to the clerk in the motor tax office who will then hand you a shiny new tax disc. It doesn't matter that the car wasn't taxed in the last year, you're only liable for tax from the month you signed the change of ownership with the seller.

    Why?
Why don't you book NCT today?
    Car is already yours.
When you Registration Certificate arrive, it will show that car was registered in your name from exact date you bought it.
