Open office

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop, but none of the models I'm looking at have Microsoft Office. The price I was quoted for it in PC World was €85, which I'd rather not have to pay were there an alternative. When I mentioned Open Office to him, he started going on about compatibility issues, and how I might get stung with those later on. He seemed genuine enough, but I can't help thinking that he was just saying that because PC World won't make anything should I download OO!

So, was he blowing smoke up my rear end, or does he have a point? Is OO generally compatible with other programmes, especially Word?

    Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry! Had Microsoft Works instead of office! Ooops!

Open office is not as polished as microsoft office however it does support most common file types.

    Have a look here:

Works has some of it's own odd formats that will give just about any other program outside of works a difficult time. That's works problem though and I think people should avoid using those formats.

I've installed OO on a good few PCs and recommended it to many people and I've not heard any complaints back other than problems opening a works file which should have been saved as a word file if they intend on sending it out to other people.

Many people prefer libre office to open office, check that out too.

They should be able to install Office Starter which is free forever, but supported by ads (not that noticeable) and only comes with Word and Excel with less than full features. However, it does everything that most people would use it for.

If you upgrade from Stater to the full version of Office then PC world will get a cut of the profits, so you could use this to your advantage and say you just want starter for now and will maybe upgrade later when you have the cash.

This is assuming PC World are set up to distribute Office Starter.

There's also lotus symphony which is quite nice too:

I'd go with Libre Office aswel. I use it now and its perfect. Files can be saved in MS Doc files aswel so there won't be compatibility issues.
