BTEA Help

Sorry that it's a bit long

I got accepted onto a course in a college and I had applied for BTEA and last week I got a phone call to say I was accepted onto it but then on Tuesday I received a call from the college to say that my course has been cancelled so I went and got myself quickly onto another course in another college (both courses full time) and paid all the fees but I also still have to pay for books and also the fee for the new course was €80 dearer than my original course so I had to borrow money on top of a credit union loan i got to pay for college originally.

I then went into my local social welfare office to say that I had been accepted onto BTEA but the course I had put down on the form has now been canceled and am now doing a different course just so I don't get in possible trouble down the line and I was told to fill out a new form and would have to wait another 4 weeks to most likely be re-accepted. I may get it backdated but I really can't wait to start getting the money because I owe it all out.

I was wondering if there was anything that I could do try and speed this along as it was not my fault. I realise I am lucky to have been accepted onto this and hope maybe somebody could offer some advice.

    1 of 2 things

    1. Ring or call to the local office. Ask for the name of a person dealing with BTEA applications. Ask to speak to them. Tell them your story and ask if they could do anything to bump your application up the queue.

    2. Go to your local CWO. Explain the situation and apply for Supplementary Welfare.

Anything the CWO pays you will be taken out of any arrears due from BTEA.

Hope that helps and good luck on your course.

It depends on your local office on how long it takes. But normally it takes a week or two for them to switch payment. However you don't get the €500 for some time. I didn't get mine till the start of November last year. I applied around same time as you and took two weeks to be accepted and then got the €500 4 weeks after it switched.
