    Hi,

I need a camcorder, mainly to shoot hour long talks. Should I go for dv, sd or hdd media formats. Any suggestions in 200-400€ range??

    Thanks

I'd go with SD as when your hard drive is full - basically it is full and if you go on holidays and don't have your laptop etc. then how are you going to transfer the footage? At least with SD you can always add an extra card or buy one if you find you have done alot of filming away from home.

I have a Panasonic 1080i SD60 which is last years model I got at the start of the year for my Holiday to Thailand and it is a nice camcorder, picture quality is pretty good; see one of my vids on youtube; and for the price €380 I was happy, I generally tend to stick with Panasonic stuff but I am genuinely happy with the camera. I don't know enough about DV except isn't it a tape format and if so I'd avoid it tbh!

If getting an SD camera make sure you get a SD-HC Card of at least 6 to 10 x Rating as the higher the rating the higher the speed of the card and this is crucial for High-Def camcorders as the card needs to be able to absorb the data at high speed or else your video maybe shuddery or pixelated, don't scrimp on a cheap SD card from Lidl or you will regret when you see your hard captured footage looking like a skype video.

I'm no expert on this by any means but like yourself I done loads of reading up on the topic before I committed to buying and after learning all I could and informing myself in the best way possible I then decided that camera ticked all the boxes for myself without spending crazy money on something I will only very rarely use.

Back in 2004 I bought a Samsung HI-8 Tape camcorder and it was for a holiday to the US and I only rarely used it and the biggest problem was the battery eventually died from lack of use and OEM batteries for Camcorders are very expensive and I paid over €50 for a 2nd battery for the camcorder above!
