A cousin of mine is a Sales rep and has a 10 Insignia, just brought it in for it's 60,000 km service and they told him that both discs and pads have to be replaced due to normal wear and tear.

Now he's done alot of mileage (previous was a Passat with 180,000kms) and never had to change discs before so he queried Opel and they just said the discs and pads in them are soft?

    After 60,000 kms??

That's very poor, only 60k km from discs is surprising.

A sign of cost cutting at Opel/Vauxhall maybe?

    Costing cutting or money making?

My brother is an Mechanic in an Opel Dealership. He said the Insignias are balls of crap. Brakes are a Known issue with them

Do a search here LM. Someone posted a few months back on this issue too. New discs at 60k km is a bit mad for long distance work.

    Or a design fault.

Warping of rear discs was a recall issue. We've just had a set of fronts done under warranty on a 2011 with 15,000km on.

Flicked throug a few 10 reg Insignia's we have on fleet and found one that had front pads done at 38k, so it seems to be an issu.

I need front pads on my audi every 23 to 25k miles from when it was new. Front discs are currently worn past audi recommendation of 1mm wear on each face and Ive a total of 54k miles of the car now.
It seems the manufacturers are moving towards designs that need discs and pads at each brake service, certainly BMW appear to push this on the larger models.
Manufacturers seem to be making discs softer and also quoting very small allowable wear.
60k km though is very poor for discs although if I had my bakes done at audi, Im sure they would have changed the discs with 2nd set of pads. 1mm allowable wear on each face is crazy.

And the worst thing is if you bring it into a Main Dealer and they think your brakes need replacing, some of them "won't leave you out incase you have an accident and try to blame the garage"

ie. They want to make money out of you!

I'm not doubting there's issues with the Insignia given the evidence already posted but does every main dealer mechanic not say the same thing about their brand? After all they only see cars with problems all the time...

Normally very true! But I've only heard good things from Landrover boyos about the Freelander 2, which is a welcome change I suppose :P

I had an Insignia this week in the UK.... meh - give me my old Vectra instead.

Diesel auto pulled like a train, but only 40mpg over 600miles on motorway.
Cruise control button os horrid.. my kids toys have more tactile buttons.
The rear wiper slapped on the rear screen on speed humps and bridge seams... took me ages to figure out that noise.
no bluetooth in an SRI (sales rep injection)??

Did you use 6th gear, out of curiousity?

    Who me?

..it was Autobox mate. I guess it used all ratios. I used cruise control the whole time too. If I had just bought it myself I would have been a little disappointed with 40mpg.. my old Vectra could do 55+ in similar driving. I would have thought a modern auto would sap so much fuel??? The car was showing 8800miles too, so well loosened up too.

...on the plus side, it was bit of a looker in Metro blue with the 18" wheels!

An Insignia brake recall is mentioned last year here.
