For years the fuel at my local was always a few cent more than the bigger companies, but now its the cheapest. Should I be concerned how it is now cheaper with all the fuel laundering stories or just top up?

All retailers have got closer to the the Tesco price, having said that if they are selling diesel at over 10 cent a litre cheaper in Tesco there's something up as Tesco are selling it at almost cost price and they would have bulk discounts.

Keep an eye out for what type of tanker is filling it up, how new it is, and where it is from, or look out for a proliferation of "cattle trucks" and other covered wagons using the station.

Also ask a couple of casual questions in the shop where's your fuel from / what brand is it, and compare the answers with the trucks you see.

Anything selling 4-5c cheaper than everyone else is suspicious these days.

Anyways some of the branded fuels such as Topaz, Maxol, and Texaco, do include additives in their fuel that do make a slight difference to mpg and engine running. I get 3-4 mpg extra from them and my particular engine runs noticeably sweeter on Topaz and Maxol for me.

Modern diesels, and their complicated technology, are particularly fussy about the fuel they use.

Also the quality of the underground tanks is very important, age, condensation, how they are vented etc. and how fresh the supplies are etc.

The lowest priced fuel is not always the cheapest in the long run.

Tip : When you have settled on a source you like, buy all your diesel there and keep all the reciepts (just stash them somewhere in the car), in the event there is any fuel problem, you'll have a lot more to back up your case that it was their fuel.

Premature corrusion of leak off hoses can be sign of dodgy fuel, as they are quite susepctable to the acid left behind in washed diesel, as are injector pumps etc. Also washed diesel, even though it keeps its combustion properties, will generally have lost all its lubricative properties, not good for your injector pumps / injectors etc.

Tesco where? It varies across the country. My girlfriend used to work at one here in the west. She regularly had to go around town checking the price of everywhere else & report back. Then head office would come back with a price to set based on that. In other words they compete locally, rather just have a nation wide price.

be aware of other maketing incentives aswell like a cheap price at the pump but higher price on goods in the shop as a way of making up the difference, its a very competitive market at the moment and there is alot of desperate station owners out there
