    Hi

I have a laptop that i wish to re-install windows on. The laptop boots off the hard drive without any problems. I went into the Bios and changed the boot order to CD/DVD and inserted my windows xp disk Saved it. It start going through the installation steps and gets as far as the hard drive stage where i should be able to setup the hard drive for the new installation. for some stange reason i get a message saying the hard drive is not recognised. I know the windows xp disk work as i have used it a number of times without problem. as i have already stated i can boot the laptop off the hard drive. as i have had the laptop for a number of years i decided to upgrade the bios and then try again but have had no luck. i have used this xp disk on my sisters laptop and it worked without any problems. The hard drive (120GB) is Sata but has one of those detachable AT connectors. The current version of window on the laptop is xp media center edition and i am trying to install window xp professional. i was thinking because xp professional is older then media center that may be the problem.

I would be grateful for any idea's on the matter. the laptop is Compaq Presario V6000.

    Kind Regards

You need to slipstream the SATA drivers for your computers chipset into the Windows XP disc, then reburn it and boot off it. As XP was originally manufactuered pre-SATA days, the setup fails to see the drive without loading a driver. Setting SATA options to Legacy/IDE mode in the BIOs settings may fix this problem, avoiding the need to reburn a CD.
You can find the SATA drivers on the Compaq website, and can use NLite to slipstream the drivers using your XP disc. Look HERE for a slipstreaming tutorial

    Hi Nick

Thanks for your response. I went into the Bios and the only option i could see that might work was to disable the sata native mode. after doing that and putting in the xp disk again it appears to be working now. XP came out before sata (as you said) and that is why i was having the problem although i never had that problem before with xp and sata.

Thanks very much for your help

    Kind regards
