A week ago i was shaving and I nicked myself just under my nose - I think there might have been a bit of a spot which I probably cut. It took ages to stop bleeding, I had to get some ice in a tissue but it did stop eventually. It formed a big hard bubble of a scab, which was annoying and unsightly. I tried to leave it alone thinking I'd let it heal - but even being as careful as I can, it just keeps getting reopened - even a small touch will open it and blood pours down my face.

Nearly a week on now and it still has not healed. Probably because yesterday when it got opened again i pulled the whole thing off. Right now its started again. Thing is i have not shaved in a week and need to but it would tear it apart

is there anything i can do to get this thing to heal? Has this happened to anyone else before?
    Thanks

I will never understand why all men aren't told of styptic pencils once they hit puberty and start shaving. I've cut myself on the bottom of the nostril, bloody sore and as you said bleeds like mad. A styptic pencil will help stop the bleeding and I find also minimize the scab size. Try a dab of savlon or germolene on it at night.

Fantastic thanks I had heard of one of those but did not know what it was called. Can I get them in any pharmacy etc? I'm wondering should I shave, cut the thing again and then use one of these?

if the scab opens again wash it with warm water to wash away most of the scabby bits and only pull away the tissue when ready and then jam the styptic pencil into it, it stings like a mofo for a few seconds but it works very well, if you shave with safety razors they are essential.

Petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, will also stop the nick from bleeding and will also prevent the blood from clotting; so no scab.

    Also Vaseline's really cheap, too.

+1 for the styptic pencil. I use an alum block:

Which if you rub it all over your face will tell you which bits you'll shaving too close and is generally helpful for learning how to shave better.

I just went to three pharmacies and none of them had it! Ugh. Will have to try more tomorrow it would be next week by the time I got it online. Will give the vaseline a go tonight though, fingers crossed!

If you order before noon shaving.ie will have the order with you the next day, check the Facial Hair & Hats forum for feedback on them. Pity today is Thursday as you'll have to wait over the weekend.

In ye olden days all chemists stocked the pencils but they are getting hard to find. You might have look in on of the older more traditional chemists and ask at the counter. They might also have a styptic powder as an alternative.
