I'm wondering if anybody has seen any of these two films, or even both, and if so, which one would they recommend and for what reasons?

They are apples and oranges, quite different and hard to compare.

I really enjoyed both films, though I seem to be in the minority of people that enjoyed Cowboys and Aliens. It's a faster paced affair than Planet of the Apes if that's what you're going for; a lot more action, and a case of what you see is what you get. Rise is more of a slow burning drama, which doesn't have as much action as its trailer suggested it was going to have.

Rise is the superior film IMO, but it depends on what you're looking for in an evening's viewing.

Planet of the Apes without a doubt, very different to the originals, not nearly as exciting as the promo trailer would suggest, but still very enjoyable.

Cowboys & Aliens is utter, utter rubbish..... last time I saw such rubbish was Mamma Mia

Cowboys & Aliens is bland crap.

Planet of the Apes is silly but mostly enjoyable nonsense.

    Certainly the latter.

I absolutely adored the apes in "The Planet". They were so charming, so different, so... alive. I'd say there could've been some more action there, though.
"Cowboys and Aliens" seemed real trash to me so I didn't watch it but since many people think it's ok maybe I'll get to it one day.

Apes was surprisingly and by a very long distance for me the best blockbuster so far this year

cowboys was **** boring nonsense, waste of a film. Please write something passable next time.

Apes was a far far better film.

Continuing the general trend here; Cowboys & Aliens was meh, while Rise of the Planet of the Apes was surprisingly excellent.

Not seen CvA, but Apes was one of my favourite 2011 films. Great fun.

There's one scene (as I remember) when
two of the apes are speaking to eachother in sign language

@OP, see ROTPOTA. Cowboys and Aliens is one of the most bland, dull films I've ever seen.
