Congrats on winning your captain's prize. No never played in it as have yet to win a captain's prize. However my father played in it two years ago and as part of the deal was granted a practice round on the course itself in the weeks preceding the final. He played the practice round and the final itself making quite a long trip on both occasions and overall was a bit underwhelmed by the course and it's condition at the time and described it as a fairly ordinary type course similar to what you'd play elsewhere. I presume Roscrea was picked since it's based in the midlands but for an all-ireland type tournament that should have gotten more publicity and prestige it was a bit disappointing not to have it held on one of the bigger courses such as the GUI headquarters in Carton House. Even if wishing to keep it in the midlands a course like Glasson near Athlone could have sparked more of a wow factor.
Having said that I believe the final itself was enjoyable and they were well catered for in Roscrea golf club. Good luck in the final.

I think this is a Roscrea GC initiative hence why it's always held there. Theoretically any course in the country could do the same, put up a prize in the Algarve and charge EUR55 entry.

Roscrea have hosted this for the past number of years. It is a great prize though for the winners. I suppose what i really wanted to know is it a long course with with tight fairways etc because, shall we just say that, tee shots with a driver wouldn't be the strongest part of my game.

    Hi Maclock.

I played in a few years ago & as per earlier post, it was all a little underwhelming. I don't know why, but I was expecting a little fuss when I got there!! But nothing like that! It was like a typical open. You arrived, signed in & played golf!

The course was ok - nothing special but it definitely would help to have played it once before the main competition itself. One of the players on my line had a caddy with him, myself & the other player didn't. But caddies are permitted.

It is held in Roscrea each year as Roscrea GC organise the competition and source the prizes etc. The year I played, the main sponsor had pulled out and the prizes were nights / weekends in local hotels. My memory is the prizes in prior years incl a trip to Portugal for the top 5 or so - mens and ladies. I am not sure what the prizes are now.

Still, even though I was disappointed overall, it is still a great honour to have the opportunity to play in this competition. Congrats on having the option!!

I played it and enjoyed it. In my case my club paid for the entry so it was a great extra to winning the captains prize. I hadn't big expectations and it was like a fairly normal society outing.

The course isn't long but it's very tight and a good challenge. If you get a chance play it before hand so you know where you're going.

I didn't feature but I think the prizes included trips to Spain.

    Thanks for the replys.
The top 4 scores get a few days away in Portugal so it's def worth the spin up from Cork. My club is paying the entrance fee so it's only the cost of the diesel (and maybe a few golf balls:p).
The funny thing is that this my 2nd time winning our captain's prize but the 1st time i've heard about this competition. I'm looking forward to it though.

    hi Maclock,
I am going to play in this competition too. Club paying for it so i said i may as well head on up from cork to play in it as prizes look good. I have not played it before so hoping this will not play part in trying to get a good score. As long as there's not 2 many doglegs and unseen obstacles to put up with then i'm hoping all will go well. Any one have an idea of how many people will be playing in this event?

How much is the entry fee? Get onto your club about it, I'm guessing you've paid plenty of subs and competition entry fees over the year that they could foot the entry fee for this entitlement.

wow that's expensive especially since it's not even on a weekend and people would have to try and take days off work in order to play it. Most of the money must be going towards the prizes given that Roscrea seem to have an open day every Wed for €15. Even their standard green fees are in the region of €30 so charging €55 for this is a bit rich.

Nobody who wins the captains prize has a job anyways, they have been practicing so hard all summer and protecting their handicap that a midweek trip to roscrea is no bother to them!

    So is Greenbo playing?

55euro is a bit saucy alright. I must admit that i probably wouldn't pay that if my club weren't covering it. At least this year the prizes are for a few days in the algarve. Last year it was a for a weekend break and golf somewhere in Ireland. I don't know how much the entry was though.
