    AutoCAD, made by Autodesk, is used for all Civil Engineering drawing.

    You can download a free student version from the Autodesk website. It is the exact same as the full version but will print a message saying "Produced by an Autodesk educational product" on all four sides. It's not a big deal, it can be easily cropped out.

    You can download a free copy here: http://students.autodesk.com/

    I used the free student version for doing all my Concrete/Steel drawings through Civil Eng. To get rid of the student license stamp on your printouts;
    1. Open the drawing in the student version
    2. Type dxfout in the command prompt
    3. Save the dxf file to USB key or email it
    4. Now on the PCs in college, open AutoCAD and type dxfin in the command prompt
    5. Browse the file you save in step 3
    6. Save the file as dwg.

    The student restrictions get lost in the dwg-dxf conversion. ;)

    If you're in Mechanical or Biomed they don't use AutoCAD, can't remember at the moment what they use....

    (The above true when I finished in 2010 anyway!)

    Mech and Biomed do use AutoCAD, they use Autodesk Inventor as well from 2nd year up.
