...what damage would your average car expect to receive?

    Depends, did you keep driving?

Brakes for a start, bodywork. Road surface would determine a lot.

For about 10 metres, at very most.

Would the impact of the wheeless area on the ground damage suspension, brakes or axle?

It could well do. Needs to go up on a ramp tbh.

As EPM says, but if the hub hits the ground, brake disk and depending if it were front or back and front or back wheel drive.
    Need more info.

Happened to a friend for mine a while ago. Wheel came off the back of a civic coupe cant rem how fast he was going but it was on a main road he it would of being in excess of 30kph. But he slowed down and the car went down at the back and beleve it or not it done no damage. Not even a bumper.
So he ran up the road after the wheel and got wheel studs from a local garage. And was back on the road after getting the garage to give it the once over.
so hopefully you will be as lucky as him :)

No one here can give an answer properly. As said pics will help but get it checked out. Are you driving it now?
