I watched Night Watch last night. Can anyone tell me what it was about? It said it was Russia's answer to The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings. What was the question?

What film is Russia's answer to the Matrix and The Lord of The Rings?

I'm currently reading the book the film is based off, it explains a hell of a lot more and I am looking forward to reading the rest of them.

Yeah read it too. It's far better than the movie IMO. (the book generally is!). Tried a few times to read the second one (Day Watch) and ended up getting bored off my t!ts.

I liked both films rather a lot, though I do think the first one is better. I also greatly enjoyed all the books.

I genuinely don't see what's so hard to follow about either film, aside from things that are common to almost any fantasy/sci-fi film ever made.

The main gist of it is that good and evil "Others" have a truce and that each has chosen a group to watch out for anyone on the other side who tries to break the truce. The story follows Anton, part of the good guys Nightwatch, as he tries to find a boy Other who is being hunted by a vampire. There's also a story about a cursed woman who could potentially destroy everything and the Nightwatch's search for a way to stop the curse. Since it's part or a trilogy of books, it doesn't say much about the whole story arc.

The books (there's 4 of them btw) are far better than the films IMO, although I did see both films before I started any of the books and really enjoyed them.

The films don't exactly follow the same plot as the books. They took some plot elements, changed them and sewed them back together in a different way, leaving other elements out. IMO they suffer because of this and have plenty of bits that don't make much sense unless you read the books.

Still very enjoyable, but maybe not as good as they could be.

I thought it was something like that all right, I just thought I was missing something.

I won't be keeping an eye out for the second anyway.

    Thanks by the way.

Did they cram all the books into the 2 films? I was always expecting a third film to come out and it never materialised but that would explain it! The ending of the 2nd did seem pretty conclusive too.

They distilled down the first book into the first film and the second book into the second film - Bekmambetov was supposed to be on board to make a third film funded by Fox Searchlight that would adapt the third book but this time be filmed in English, serving as a conclusion to the trilogy, but for whatever reason (possibly the underperformance of the second film, possibly Bekmambetov going off and doing Wanted in the meantime) it never got off the ground. Most reports since Wanted came out seem to be that he'd like to do it but it's unlikely to be any time soon...

They also mix bits of the 2nd book in the 1st film, bits of the 1st book in the 2nd film, leave out some plot threads and add in new ones.

From what I heard the 3rd film was to named after the 3rd book, but to mostly contain more of the plot threads from the first two.

I enjoyed the books but not the films which are pretty messed-up.
