It took only 2 days for me in 2009 (Dundalk), but my brother passed his test there about 2 months ago and it took over a month to get here! - there is supposedly a large backlog at the moment!

So what do you do between you pass the test and get the license?

In Denmark we get a temporary permit we can use only minutes after passing until we get the proper full card (which usually takes a few weeks)

not helping the OP, but in germany its even more efficient and the tester has your licence with him at the test!

If you pass you get the licence into the hand and can drive straight away (with a clatter of signatures as is normal in germany).

If not, the licence goes back to the testing authorities awaiting your retest.

Hope mine is here next wk as sent the application in by post & had to include Learner Permit so at the moment dont physically have a licence to hand a garda if I get stopped. Have a photocopy of my Learner Permit, application for full licence & pass sheet from driving test! hope this will be ok if I get stopped which I haven't at any stage since I started driving 6mths ago.

Marley123, it would be a hard Garda that would prosecute you, but by law you do not have a licence and are therefore driving without one.

They used to be very quick, but have generally built up a long backlog of late. Seems to be several weeks now.

I sent my application to Nutgrove Tax Office last wk & rang today & they are processing applications today that were received on Monday & Tuesday

I sent my application to Dublin County Council (or whoever) on a Monday or Tuesday and had the licence in the post that Friday. I kept photocopies of everything though. This was in June of this year.

was told in tax office that you can drive and the receipt they give you will do for guards, a harsh guard will give you a 10 days to bring lic into guarda station when you get it, once everything is road legal tax insurance and lic for vehicle your driving

I walked in the day after with my form/certificate/pictures, and got it there and then.
I would have gone the day I passed, except the tax office had closed by that point.

I'm assuming the OP is talking about sending his in the post?
