Its coming up to my Dad's 60th and I want to get him a tour bag and get his name and golf club logo embroidered on it. I've sorted the embroidery but I need to pick a good tour bag. I want one that he can get in and out of the car without getting a hernia, do people have any recommendations?

He normally gets dark bags if thats any help and went from an taylormade r7 to a powacaddy one, he has an electric cart so he's not going to be carrying it around the course.

    Thanks

    Hi OP.

Firstly it's a very generous gift seeing as it's going to cost you a few quid but there are a couple of things you should consider first.

For starters, if he upgraded from an R7 bag to a Powacaddy one then chances are its not that old and they are very good bags anyway so there might not be any need for a new one.
Secondly, it's a bit of a no no getting your name and logo embroidered on a bag unless you are a touring pro or club pro or something similar. You generally don't see it on the bag of a normal golfer and the general consensus is that it implies that you are an elite level golfer when chances are you arn't.
You'd want to be sure first that your dad would be comfortable using the embroidered bag before you purchase it. If you do go ahead and get one then all brands are generally in and around the same price and size, but you are better off getting a bag that matches his clubs (ie) if he has Ping clubs, then get a Ping bag.

Thanks I appreciate the response, he has mizuno irons and taylormade woods so not sure what bag to go for from them, going to ask him about it, want it to be a surprise but I'm sure he'll have an opinion on colour and getting his name on it. He won the powakaddy one so he has no real attachment to it. So which do you think is better

I do like that one but I was thinking I should get one that corresponds to his clubs, but he might not be that concerned with matching bag to brand

also consider how it woulld fit on his buggy .... some of those big bags dont fit properly

Tour bags are pretty damn heavy things to be lugging in and out of a boot, they also dont fit great on a trolley as they are designed to be carried - you would be better off with a purpose made cart bag.

Agree with the other poster about the name and logo being unusual on anyones bag apart from elite guys but if he is happy with the idea then go for it. Though the make is irrelevant as he might change clubs in a 12month etc. Too much of matching gear smacks of watching too much TV and wanting to be a pro!

Thanks for the advice, I never knew the tour bags wouldn't fit his cart, I'll probably end up getting him an 8.5" bag if thats the case. I'm only getting his name and the club crest and given he plays in enough tournaments for them and is course director so I think he might be able to swing the whole club crest, also he's been a member there 40 years this year me thinks

I think I'll have a wander to McGuirks unless there is somewhere better? Sorry I've been working in the states so not really up on my golf shops in Ireland, I usually go to my pro

personally i dont think there is anything wrong with getting his name on teh bag .. sure its only a bit of fun ... couple of years ago the capts prize in my club was a cart bag with the players name on the bag and the year of the capts ... looked cool

yeah I'm not getting a big Irish Flag and his name in Caps so I think the crest would look great on the bag and then he'd be happier than a pig in Sh1te when he brings it abroad to play. I will be consulting him on it or at least what bag to get him....now if anyone knows how to get their hands on an iPhone 5 in the next three weeks let me know :P

wow, what a means of destroying any resale value the bag had not to mention you couldn't bring it back and exchange it for something you might prefer/want.
A cart bag is a good prize but I'd prefer to pick it out myself based on the style, color and brand.

well i assume he probably had a choice on bag .. its not like they had someone on the end of the phone waiting to get the nod for the winner so they could quickly stitch it all in and have it ready for the presentation that evening ... anyway .. i though it was cool ...

I didn't think there was much in the resale of bags, by the time I change mine they tend to be wrecked, I had one on adverts for months with no movement

EDIT: Sorry read that wrong thought you meant second hand instead of new bag trade in

Just my tuppence worth, I have a tour back and it fits fine on the trolley but the issue is the side and reverse pockets are pretty much inaccessible. I find to get rain gear etc out I need to unclip the bag and half lift it off...

As regards putting the name on it I would be bothered about putting the name on it, if you think he'd like it the go with it, there seems to be an air of negativity (an irish thing!) on here when it comes to having your name ony anything, my own view is, why not...a tour bag is a good investment and will last a long time so why not put a name on it no point having an inferiority complex! And f the begrudgers (no offence to meant to any bedgruders on here!;)).

Sounds like a great idea but a Tour bag is heavy and not really suitable for a cart, balance and access to pockets. I only have an issue with bags that have too much white, gets dirty and is hard to keep white white. The other problem in this country is the amount of rain so make sure it has some protection and can keep the clubs dry.

    Best of luck.

I have the titleist 9.5in staff bag and it works perfectly on my trolley. The large back pocket which you think might be inaccessible as it lies against the cart actually isn't as the zip allows access from the sides. Great bag.

So talked to my Dad over the weekend and according to him he has loads of golfbags which made me pose the question "Where are you hiding this stash of golfbags?" Anyway he wants wetgear which puts me in another dilemma of brands and what good and whats not? He's looking for a short sleeved top so if anyone has anygood recommendations I'd love to hear them?

    thanks,

    Req

    EDIT: 600th post jaysus! :D

    Galvin Green.

    End of.

Expensive but far and away the best wet gear I have ever encountered. The only thing that came close for me was a Footjoy Red Label jacket I have.

Nice one, I'll have a look around and see what I can get for him, do you have any recommendations of online stores I could pick it up?I'm sure there are hundreds but if there was one people recommended I'd be interested
