I'm thinking of studying for either the professional tax exams or the tax technician exams this october, have a degree in business currently working in general management and want a career change. Can anybody advise me what the current opportunities are like for tax trainees and newly qualified at the moment. Is there too many qualified tax professionals out there? would I have a problem gaining a training contract or a junior role while studying and would it be of any benefit if I could prove that i have funded myself through part 1, would be grateful for any advice at all.

    Hi Lucky,

I'm in a similiar boat to yourself.
I'm mad looking to get into tax (I qualified with ACCA earlier this year) coming from a small (general) accounting practice.

I talked to one or two agencies and they said the routes to get into a tax department are either
    1) going in as a tax trainee and working your way up or
    2) being recruited as a tax senior/manager

There seems to be no inbetween

I've been sending out CV's over the past month and have found it very frustrating. Not getting responses to most applications. Most places seem to want big 4 experience and/or 4/5 post qualified experience.

I'm starting the Institute of tax course in October (fortunately I have part 1 exempted as I'm coming from ACCA).

I'm open to correction on any of the above but that's been my experiences.
I know this probably isn't of much use to you so hopefully more experienced people will post some advice

Thanks Santino, I am thinking of doing tax institute exams myself in oct I have exemptions from half of part 1 so just two subjects to complete i'm hoping after that I can convince potential employers of my dedication by proving I have funded myself through part 1 hope that makes a difference. I would be looking for a trainee position with a view to working my way up from there, not too worried about the salary drop just eager to get a foot in the door. Would love to hear from others who have taken this route or who know about the area, thanks.
