Some cars can be dealer programmed to do that. If not, you could use a relay to use the interior lights as a trigger to fire the headlights - presuming your interior light comes on when the car is unlocked. Downside to that is every time someone opens a door, your headlights are going to come on. You could fit an additional switch which would kill the circuit once you're inside the car though to prevent that.

My headlights come on when I open car even briefly and I regard it as a nuisance especially in winter when it's an extra drain on battery. I was thinking of getting mine re-programmed (or trying it myself) to stop h/lights coming on like this - I wouldn't mind interior lights coming on. Would it be easy to re-programme in a golf?

You might get a better answer if you mentioned the make/model of car.

Reprogramming the golf would be easy all you need is the dealer level diagnostics vas pc (I have them there great)

I'm not sure if this is possible on the Golf, it depends on the year.

A dealer would charge about an hours labour so you're looking at close to €100. That's assuming the dealer would know how to do it. They understand using VCDS for diagnostics, not sure about chaging the car set up like this.

Seeing as you have the function, it should be easy to disable with vagcom. Alot of people have this equipment now so no need for the dealer really. Once vagcom connected, there are sometimes tick boxes where you can deselect these type of functions. Even if no tick box, it is just a matter of changing some code. The problem though is to know which code to change. Luckily there are alot of guys who are brilliant at this stuff and so some internet forum will point you in the right direction. Always write down the original codes before you change anything.
I changed a few things on my Audi myself with my own cable.

The dealers can be a bit iffy on doing this stuff.
