I've just gotten a student travelcard and wish to now purchase a seasonal/timebased ticket...
Is it true for students that the monthly ticket has to be bought at the beginning of the month? I know it's this way with the adult ticket but is it the same for students?
How about the weekly one, can I buy one tomorrow to last me until next Tuesday?

Yeh, has to be bought at start of the month, it's stupid I know, especially when you have bank holidays and month starting on a weekend, you can get screwed a bit sometimes. Not sure about weekly tickets, but imagine it's the same, maybe someone else can tell you?

    Thanks for the info...
I think I'm going to buy it tomorrow anyway, still have 17 days left in this month which works out at 83.30 getting daily return tickets or 80.25 getting two return tickets and three student weekly tickets...
Am I correct in thinking I can get a monthly ticket for 76euro??

Ashtown to Maynooth, it's 4.90euro day return.

I first got weekly student tickets when I starting going to maynooth from coolmine train station but they only lasted for 5 days and I had fridays off so then I used to get a 3 day normal ticket and a normal return ticket on thursday. Now though I got myself a smartcard I just tag on/tag off if you look at the prices of each fare it might work out better value then your monthly one and you top it up online too. It's also of great use to me as I use the train to go to work too in Aviva Stadium.

With the smartcard for you it would be €2:35 one way. https://www.irishrail.ie/smartcard/pages/welcomeAnonymousIV.jsf

Also you can also not pay on the way to maynooth and if a ticket inspector gets on say you got on at broombridge because you can't buy tickets there so if your address is near there they will accept that excuse.Just make sure your parents know to back you up on this if they ring them to check this.

does any one use the Student 7 Day Bus and Luas €25.00.

Does it work for the train as well ?

Judging by the fact it says Bus and Luas I'd say no ;) Too cheap to be all three, there is no integrated card for all three afaik.

I just went and had a look at that smartcard business on irishrail.ie. Think I'll get one. However, I wouldn't be using it very much, so what I'm wondering is if anyone knows whether there's a time limit on using the credit or topping up the thing?

Might sound like a silly question but, for instance, vodafone (sods) recently said I wouldn't be able to use my phone anymore unless I topped up, despite having a load of credit on it. They have some stupid six month rule or something. Hoping irishrail don't pull the same crap.
