If you drop out of a course covered by free fees, then you are required to pay for a portion of the new course. The whole "free fees" scheme is a grey area when it comes to dropping out and changing so you might want to talk to a professional/college officer about it

I think it would have been best if he had stayed with the Level 7 course as Its higher than the leaving Cert for entry into a Level 8 course. From my dealings with regards to paying fees it is likely that he will have to pay fees for the duration of the three year Level 8 course and he will not be entitled to a maintenance grant. Its a shame that no one tells students about this sort of thing and it appears that with the free fees their are a number of conditions and one is that you got one shot and thats it. The only way to avoid him having to pay fees would be to wait five years, which I sure he doesnt want to do

I am almost certain that this is not true. He may have to pay for year 1 but not all years.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
