I am running windows vista and want to upgrade to a SSD. Is there any potential issues with that or would I be better off upgrading to windows 7?

Also, could anyone recommend a good SSD please?

You shouldn't have any issues. That said, I'd still recommend upgrading to 7, simply because its miles better than Vista.
