The Thistle hotel is very central and just opposit the train station. Theres a jurys over there somewhere aswell. The Hilton Gateshead is close by aswell its opposite side of the river beside the bridge so not far to walk.

There isnt really a main street. Theres 2 areas for pubs, The quays and the haymarket. Havent been in Newcastle in a while but the haymarket is probably the wilder drunker area of the two (not that the quays is much better). If theres a match on the saturday and they win theres a good buzz around

I recently stayed in the Holiday Inn Express which is 10 odd minutes walk to city centre and 5 from the stadium. It was only £50 a night for double or twin rooms, worked out about €27 a night each. Nice and clean, functional but with tv, air con, a bar and breakfast with the price of your room. Can't link cos I'm on my phone but you should check it out.

Haymarket is where you're looking for!
I've stayed in the Premier Inn which is grand.
