Would you take a job that involved a 3 hour, 145 mile round trip?

    Pay: ~ €30k

It depends, is it a job you would love? If not then that commute would become unbearable pretty quickly!

Is the salary -the cost of transport enough to cover your monthly outgoings?

    No. It's "just a job".

Can't be definite about the salary. It's just an estimate.

Well each to their own, if i was unemployed i would go for it, if on the other hand you were currently in a job it would have to work out a lot better financially to me to make the move.

I would, I'd rent a room close to work though, if you don't have kids I see and aren't looking after an elderly relative or whatever I see no reason why you wouldn't take the job. My first job was in Dublin, I moved there but came home to Cork every weekend.

In a word, No, Not if I had to do that kind of driving every day.

Like the others have said though, if you could relocate fine. Renting a room - on top of rent or mortgage at home will be tough on 30k though.

As long as transportation costs will not eat a bigger part of your salary, go for it!

And if you can commute comfortable, ie, by train, then 1.5hrs one way isn't a big deal!

Suggestion: Perhaps you could negotiate a 4-day week on a full-time basis, ie, without reduction of hours? It would then make 3hrs trip less painful.

It depends. If the journey was mostly motorway then yes, I would take the job.

Well I'm currently doing a job that involves a 200km commute every day at just under an hour and a half each way (almost all motorway)

The time and the distance doesn't bother me but the cost is a killer. Around €550 per month in diesel and tolls, plus the extra wear and tear caused by a 1000 km weekly commute which equals extra servicing, tyres, quicker depreciation (06 Passat with 188000 km on it and rising rapidly!)

To be honest by the time I pay my bills and these extra costs, I have very little left every month, but it's better than the alternative (I was forced to do THAT for a year after being laid off)

    Could you move closer OP?

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

The "job" in question has been neither interviewed for or offered. I was just looking for input on the subject. I think the extra cost of renting near a place of work or commuting (as per Kaiser2000) would greatly outweigh the possible position. I also think quality of life would hit an all time low.
