Depends on the ground. personally I'd rather hunt places I can be mobile, but on a permission of mine, it borders a river. On the other side of the river, maybe eighty yards away, is a high seat on the edge of a small block of forestry. Now, this permission is all bracken and long grass and stone walls, so the best way to hunt it is to pick a spot to observe from, sneak to a wall when you see animals and make the shot, and it could be long. the guys on the other side are doing much the same thing, but they're not getting rained on and are out of the wind, with better sight lines. There's something to be said for that!

Yea think it depends on the ground. I have a high seat on the edge of a forestry that opens up into a 90 acre field and its a perfect spot. When working in America its the done thing where you go in the woods and sit in a high seat for a few hrs and wait for the deer to come to you. Doesnt really appeal to me, but in my situation Its perfect as I can scout the field from a height. Id love to see when muntjac become more popular will high seats become more popular thatd be good shootin!

Can be well worth the effort if it is located correctly. They are invaluable if you are trying to keep deer out of corn or other crops, and definately do give you a better overview of the countryside which also makes for safer shooting. They are however a lot of work to build and maintain,so sighting them really does need some fore thought.
Maybe a treestand might be abit handier for Ireland??
However, you really do need to know what you are about when you are building one,as these are mostly wood constructions, slap dash carpentry will get you killed or injured pretty quickly.

    Thanks lads ,

Just asked the question to see if people thaught of it as kind of the lazy way of doing it and would it be frowned upon for giving it a go

have to say they dont appeal to me at all but I can understand them being used in certain situations as grizzly says protection over corn but there are two set up on lands near me that are not needed its just lazy shooting nothing better than stalking deer but thats just my opinion

many a time I fell asleep in one

We have them up on quite a lot of our permissions, elevated height gives you a safe backstop down into the ground which is one of ther main purposes

More generally use them in the evening time, get in 2 hours b4 dusk and get yourself comfortable, wonderful way to watch the world go by !!

Also on Coilte lets you can only shoot the (2hours b4 dusk I think)if it's done from high seats.

if we are dealing with problem deer we'll often set temp ones and we'll sit in while someone walks the woods and covers out to stir the deer.

    Not lazy in anyway

Apart from the saftey feature of shooting from a high to a low position. The permanence of the seat gives you the ability to pace/measure out distances to make your shots more accurate.
Where in stalking, you have to estimate the ranges and distances on a constantly changing target. The tree seat assures you a safe distance and possibly a more accruate shot if it is built properly with a stable rifle rest.

Lazy,no.More luck if somthing comes into the fire zone of the tree seat.
I pretty much grew up with this kind of hunting method. From what I can see in Ireland there are opportunities to use these seats in certain circumstances. But due to our land usage and farming methods it wont be a one size fits all solution.

Be more worried here that we dont really have the suitable thin cheap pole timber to build one of theseproperly .Which is usually in Germany Larch or a tall pine type of tree grown specifically for outdoor woodwork. Not to mind we can be sure some Cnut usually a vandal or anti once they discover what the purpose of these are will either wreck it or sabotage it to cause themselves injury for "compo" or for you to injure yourself on it.IE sawing halfway through the support poles or the like.:(
