Laptop for Computer Sci course

    Hi all,

I'm starting a computer science course and want to upgrade to a new laptop. I have my eye on these 2:

    http://www.harveynorman.ie/np-rv511-a08uk.html
    http://www.harveynorman.ie/np-rc520-s02uk.html

    The differences are:

Intel i3 processor vs Intel i5 processor
    4gb RAM vs 6gb RAM
640gb hard drive vs 750bg hard drive

Everything else including graphics card appears to be the same. Are the differences worth the e130?

Also, would they suffice for someone doing a computer science course? For what its worth, aside from course work and programs, it will be used for MS Office, Guitar Rig and Cubase, and internet browsing. I'm not a huge PC gamer so can't see me taxing the memory or processor too much.

Would you recommend these laptops or could you advise of a better alternative. BTW my budget really is maxed around 600!

    Thanks all :D

*EDIT*: Also seen this one which appears to be an upgraded version of the rv511 for the same money. Only downside is I was hoping to pay in installments because I'm not flush with cash right now!

Yes but its an ancient dell. Grand for web browsing and basic tasks but its single core processor, 1gb RAM and 80 gb hard drive I need to upgrade

Well for computer science courses at undergraduate level, anything in good working order will do really. I mean you wouldn't want something that freezes or crashes constantly.

Well I'm upgrading anyway so might as well drop the extra 100-200 and get something decent. How would you rate the third suggestion I had in my first post?

Concerned about battery life. I don't think "up to 3 hours" is great. A dedicated gfx card will be a drain on the battery. Something without a dedicated gfx card might be better in terms of battery life, power consumption, heat, noise and weight. All good qualities to have for if it's a laptop that you'll be carrying around everyday
